Chris Kalogeropouls I've nicknamed Maximum Security 'Skeedaddle'. This meaning: To depart quickly or hurriedly; run away. He definitely showed us he can skeedaddle! He was my pick to win. No bet, just had a feeling about him. Read somewhere he's got sprinter speed. And obvious stamina. I was surely disappointed on Derby Day.

Rebecca, IF Max hadn't avoided that muddy inside turn, he may very well have fallen. He did the natural thing, Max did what the other horses were doing, staying out of that inside muddy lane. Can we argue, then, that other horses/jockeys held Max to that inside lane. Wouldn't that be illegal?

Thank you for acknowledging that. Most people don’t realize how bad that could’ve been if War of Will didn’t back off. The Jockey on Maxim Security created a very dangerous hazard by cutting Maxim security off. Sadly most people don’t care about the horses in the race and care more about money

Hold up, the video of it is slowed down and you still dont see it? Watch the rear legs as maximum changes lanes, that could have gotten people and horses killed. Maximum was the fastest horse but if a objection is called it must be investigated and with your own eyes you see why you can not just run over someone else lane UNLESS it is clear with enough room as to not endanger the riders or horses / facepalm

vambo13257 Country Houses’ jockey was not the first jockey to say something. Toddy’s jockey was. CH’s jockey just happened to say something after. It was a domino effect that happened here. No doubt Maximum was the best horse, but he could have caused a massive wreck at the end there. it was dangerous & you can’t deny that.

Neither did War of Will. He was on the rail, and then quickly shifted to the right, bumping Long Range Toddy out of his lane. A clear foul, and the reason WoW's jockey did not file the protest.

@@jml-rj5re YES! Several horses broke to the right because of all the mud, and Max was NOT the first horse to break to the right. Horses are horses: they see mud, they see other horses take safer routes, Max did what the other animals did first. YES, there could have been a pile-up at the end. But there could have been dozens of pile ups! If I owed a million-dollar horse, I wouldn't have ran him/her in this race. Too dangerous. Too fast, too muddy.

Regardless of whether it was accidental or on purpose, this incident could have been disastrous. I don’t think it was done on purpose but, rules are rules. You can not impede another horse in the field like that & it happened. Maximum seemed to be the best horse but War of Will was going to make his move, along with Long Range Toddy & they both got screwed over. Unfortunate event that happened here, but we should be glad no one got hurt.

If he was going to make his move he had at least 200 yrds around the turn and in the early stretch. Instead he faded like his numbers predicted he would just like the 13. Most of the rules you cite are about jockey misconduct not normal everyday racing. The stuff they DQed #7 happens in most races with congestion.

What makes a horse do a lead change at a particular moment? Tired and feel the need to do so? Can it be anticipated a young horse, or any horse, might do this prematurely in a turn? I would think a sloppy track may contribute to the horse's decision to change lead...anyone give me some insight on this? Thank you.

In my eyes, it doesn't matter if it's a $7,500 maiden claimer at Turf Paradise, or the Kentucky Derby...there are rules in place for a reason. In fact there are some people whom believe that following the rules, and enforcing said rules is "soft".

I agree. Max. Security cut off War of Will. No doubt about it. Why the fans were booing our state governor is beyond me. It wasn't Gov. Bevin's fault. I saw the infraction, when it happened. At minimum, I knew there was going to be some conversations about turn 4 traffic.

Horse was on left lead..changed to right in a split second (in sloppy conditions, did he feel himself in danger of slipping?), jockey did not have time to react (although who's to say that a more intuitive one would have felt that leg change coming and be prepared for it?)..lots of factors involved in racing large animals at these speeds round an uncambered bend...

The "true" winner is whatever horse wins according to the rules, not despite the rules... If a basketball team is up by 1 and they foul at the end of a game and the other team hits two free throws to win the game, you wouldn't say the first team is the "true" winner, not regarding the one foul call that you didn't like. Another point: Maximum Securitys jock was riding with loose reins right at the spot where his colt ducked to the right. On a muddy track, riding a young horse, he should have kept a feel of his mouth and given him more guidance; then perhaps the lead change would have come at the right time. And, yes, I know it's not easy.

John Amidon .....john he was using the needle to pinch him, so the reins have to be like that, just to act like he was riding. A cover up. He lost on saturday at 1.9 odds. He is done, because the connections make him run in the derby more than he could.

I'll never view another Derby in the same way. I think they tarnished a good reputation for honest horse racing. There are going to be unintentional bumps and lane changes when everyone is that close, especially on a muddy track. Poor, poor decision by the committee.

I agreed totally. Decisions which Churchill Down stewards made were bunch of Bull Sh..... Because they did not show the "Front or Top Views" video reviews at the time when Max Sec shifted little to the right side. Horse Racing Industry do not want yhe cheapest priced horse to win the Ky Derby because if cheapest horse wins this will screw-up price of horses in future not to pay hundreds-thousands of dollars.

Having more than 15 horses in the field is dangerous and it creates traffic problems like this particularly when bad weather is a factor. The organizers have been greedy for years putting 20 horses in the derby and this is the end result a predictable collision that results in a sham of a race. They should be ashamed of themselves.

It quite clearly was not intentional. But it WAS careless. If he'd moved a fraction of a second earlier or later than he did, horses and jockeys could've died. And yes, there does need to be a consequence for that. I can only hope this isn't a career ender for Max's jockey.

There's bets and prize money, it's just another race, the standard racing rules apply. The movement did create a pile up of 3 or 4 horses with a lot of momentum. If that pack got even or in front by the straight it's hard to determine what the outcome would have been, they were left in the dust as the result.

Simply put. The track was muddy and sloppy. Max veered out just a little because of the condition of a muddy and sloppy track. It was fortunate enough it ended w/o any injury. Still MS was clearly the best horse.

Ugly conditions that almost resulted in a horrific pileup that could've killed jockeys and horses... But the rule is there for a reason... To prevent deadly accidents. And yes, the conditions were a factor. If it wasn't muddy I don't think the horse does that, but it happened and you have to have zero tolerance for that.

The owners of Maximum Security are going to protest the decision. They are looking at their options now. Maximum Security was ahead the entire race and won the race by almost 2 lengths. None of those horses would have beaten him no matter what. I think they shouldn't run on a sloppy track either, it's not fair to any of the horses. Country House didn't "win" the Derby, it was given to him. A very bad decision.

Look for the lead change at 22 seconds. You'll see him change leads to the right foot which caused him to stray off the turn and crowd the other horse almost causing a catastrophe.

MS was the better horse, but he did come off the rail in front of WOW who checked causing LRT to check and so on. Folks as was said in the video that could of been a really bad accident , there would of been several horses fall and riders . How War Of Will did not clip heels with MS was a blessing. If MS go's on to run and win the next two legs , this DQ want hurt him a bit. He will be worth a bunch.

for your information just to clear this up, what ACTUALLY happened is that, Maximum Security's leg was literally wrapped under one of the other horses leg, so he really had no other choice but to go in front of the other three horses WHICH is why those three jockeys launched the complaint. SO IN CONCLUSION something disastrous would probably have happend if Maximum Security didn't do that, and that's the reason we should be mad because like nobody is paying attention to what could have happened if he didn't move up front so we should be thankful that he did that

I have been a race track goer for over 50 years and the amount of times a horse has been taken down with just a jockey claim and no stewards inquiry in a major stake race you could count on 1 hand in the last 50 years. This was a travesty.

I've hesitated to give my opinion but after watching the replay several times,this could have been a total disaster, with a pile up coming out of turn four. How their hooves and legs didn't get tangled up is very fortunate. Yes rules are rules and this time the right decision was made by the stewards. One thing is certain,there will not be a triple crown winner for 2019.

Zero chance he runs in either the Preakness or the Belmont. He ran a hard race and was a tired horse at the end of the race. The crawling fractions of the last 3/4 mile attest to that. It's an indictment of this mediocre at best field that no one could pass him of the horses he didn't interfere with. I expect he will next race in either the Travers at Saratoga or the Haskell at Monmouth this summer. I want to also see how Omaha Beach does when he gets back.

It is unlikely, yet we should not expect a Triple Crown winner every year. Each of the races in the Triple Crown is a significant achievement on their own. Winning all three takes an exceptional horse, with a good team of trainer, jockey, etc, an owner with the funds and desire to pay for everything - and some decent racing luck.

I think War of Will could have actually won had this not happened to him. More people need to give that Jockey on war of will more credit. He prevented a very dangerous and most likely fatal crash VERY quickly. Good job to that jockey and hope he gets some credit for that.

If War of Will had gone down, it would have been one of the biggest catastrophes in the history of horse racing. Some of the finest thoroughbred horses in the world would have been hurt or destroyed, riders could have been killed or maimed. It's unfortunate, but Maximum Security deserved the disqualification. My family raised and raced thoroughbred racehorses for better than 60 years. I know of which I speak.

They really need to cut the field down to 12. The better horses didnt even hit the board besides the dq winner. There is a huge speed advantage in the Kentucky Derby because horses are forced very wide and bumbed blocked. The jockey cheated, go watch in slow mo. He does the ol' lift your left leg ever so small so his weight is all on HIS right leg which then leans the horse to the right. Maybe it was a coincidence he did it right when the "momentum" horse started charging and got in the jockeys peripheral. Either way. He basically made a horse pull up and clearly that horse would have went around the disqualified one. Its a sneaky move. If that dang river wasnt there he woulda pulled it off but the horse had to go tooooo far over cause of that stream on the track

Watching the interference on replay shows that a disaster with possible fatalities was oh so narrowly avoided. The best horse did not win, disappointingly, but this rule must be enforced for the safety of the sport. Thank goodness no casualties occurred.
