There's an interview with him after this race where he explains the amount of preparation that goes into this. This is not amateur hour. He prepares like any good student would, getting ready for a final exam. He makes flashcards with the names of the horses, the numbers and silk colors they will be sporting on race day. He not only prepares flashcards for the horses that are on the entry list, but also for the alternates, in case a horse gets pulled out, which is what happened when Rich Strike got in, at the last minute.

Is Trevor still calling races? Wow, back in my horse racing days when I was in college, me and my buddies used to go to Santa Anita on the weekends. Del Mar in the summer. Trevor was a big part of those memories.

The next thing I would love to see is an interview with this special astute commentator and asked him questions about this particular race especially in the final moments should be very special and interesting

I was surprised how long it took him to notice rich strike moving through the pack. He didn't mention it until he was literally taking the lead.

Rich Strike made up most of his ground right before the wire. It was a great call to mention the two favorites battle it out down the stretch , then Larry quickly spotted Rich Strike when he got up at the wire. He didn't miss it, cause it didn't happen until the last second.

How were you surprised? I don’t know anyone who saw it. RS move through the pack but he didn’t burst out until he made that move off the rail like 10 seconds before the finish line.

I think it might be because he was looking at the monitor for most of the stretch call. It was hard to see Rich Strike on TV, but it could have been easier for one looking at the track.

@@steveseger5642 You must be related to Uncle Larry. He totally blew the call by announcing other horses (Simplification) even after Rich Strike was two lengths ahead of him.

@@steveseger5642 He didn't quickly spot Rich Strike. He waited much too long to notice him. Rich Strike wasn't magically inserted into the lead at the end. It was the result of a process of moving up the rail and passing other horses.

It seems that he had already preordained to discount Rich Strike, which he did throughout 95% of the race. Rich Strike is not "coming up on the inside." Rich Strike "came up on the inside." Collmus is about 17 seconds late.
@steveseger5642
@steveseger5642 2 жыл бұрын
Rich Strike didn't get involved with the two leaders until the final couple yards and Larry caught it perfectly at the wire. Announcers are not going to call all horses making up ground in the stretch. Its easy to see Rich Strike in replays after the race, cause your only watching one horse. You must be new to horse racing.

Loved watching him call the race, and I myself could never ever do anything like this. I'd be all mixed up. I just wish he had caught a glimpse of Rich Strike just a little bit earlier so he could have been getting excited watching Rich Strike catch up as opposed to only mentioning him as he took the lead.

Prepared, professional and talented. Obviously a terrific race caller. But people need to be serious. There are other race callers who would have picked up the winner's move earlier than that. My original assumption was that he missed it due to using binoculars focused on the leaders, but now I know even that wasn't true. Undeniable professionalism and enthusiasm, though.
