Kentucky loses third-straight SEC Tournament game and we are sad | Rapid Reaction

Kentucky quickly fell into an 8-1 deficit not even two minutes into the action. While high pace favored the ‘Cats, Texas A&M was red-hot. But the tide shifted in UK’s favor once Dillingham and Sheppard checked in. Kentucky took its first lead, 16-15, at the 13:15 mark. Sheppard, in particular, got rolling.
The SEC Freshman of the Year poured in 14 first-half points, even hitting back-to-back triples at one point. Dillingham had 11 of his own, but Wade Taylor and his 18 points couldn’t be stopped. Eventually, Texas A&M ballooned its lead to double-digits. Kentucky typically had an answer, but the Aggies always did too.
A made three-pointer from Tyrece Radford, one of eight first-half makes from deep for A&M, gave the Aggies its largest lead of the game to this point at 11 with 3:08 until the intermission. Kentucky was able to cut it down to six by the break despite Reeves playing just nine minutes due to foul trouble.
Texas A&M finally cooled off from deep to start the second half, but Kentucky still couldn’t get all the way back. The Aggies decided to go into the paint and immediately made a living. Reeves actually made it a three-point game right out of the gate, but soon picked up his third foul and went straight back to the bench.

We say 'no defense' and that is basically right. But I think there is a greater problem with this team. That was some damn good defense against Tennessee wasn't it, against Auburn, against Alabama. What happened. Kentucky brought no effort to this game. I can imagine that a few of our players are reading the Papers and Social media a little too much. Well Texas AM just sent you a message, "your crap does stink" , "you don't walk on water", "No one in the NBA is staying up late at night trying to figure out how they are going to get you." Kentucky you just got your ass handed to you by a team that ranks 360th out of 362 in total offense, they dropped 97 points against you. they doubled their field goal averages against you. Of course shouldn't feel too bad, your still on par with where you were when UNC Wilmigton kicked your ass's. But that was at the start of the season, I guess as a fan I thought you might improve an iota or two. Good luck it was a lot of fun watching a few of your games.

@@gracynrice7740 I don't agree with this. I never saw guys not diving for the ball, running all out, etc. Our defensive execution was terrible, and our bigs were basically useless. We can give up lay ups or threes but not BOTH, and we gave up both. We also missed six shots from inside three feet, AND had some of the worst officiating I have seen in quite some time. Despite all this we could have won that game. I bet they go back to the "stop the damn straight line drive lay ups" in practice this week and roll through to the FF.

Simply inexcusable. There’s no point even discussing this stuff anymore. Our program has fallen so very far down the ladder and we are just stuck. Unfortunately, next weekend won’t be any better. This team is too weak to go on any type of a run. If we get roughed up whatsoever, it’s over. I predict a second round exit and I hate that, but it’s just what I truly feel is coming. This is supposed to be one of the best times of the year and instead here I sit again with most likely nothing to look forward to. The sec tournament matters. It matters to the fans. We will spin this in our lizard brains that this L might be good for the team going into the NCAA tourney, but we know in our hearts that this is just another Cal coached team that will underperform in spite of having all the talent and potential. Cals unwillingness, or inability to make strategic changes during a game is really his legend here in Ky. I don’t think we actually stopped the ball on penetration more than a handful of times against A&M. He is the Mark Richt of college basketball, doing “less with more ” every season, but instead ,,,, Cal has a lifetime contract, so complaining is all we can really do. Thank our AD for masterminding that brilliant deal after winning a title with an NBA all star team on the roster. Heck, Billy Gillespie could have coached that team!

@@steveblair6304 All of that is true, and I was calling for someone new after the Wisconsin game. BUT, Cal has FINALLY adapted to the modern game. He no longer deflates the ball with a four point lead and six minutes to play. He doesn't bench a guy for taking a wide open three in transition. He is recruiting shooters, and letting them shoot. 5-10 years ago, he hadn't adapted to the modern game. This year he has. I still worry if he'll revert to his old coaching ways in a close game in the tournament. But, one thing that is a REQUIREMENT to win a title is an NBA player on your roster. Good coaching is not a requirement, but NBA level talent is, and that's backed by decades of facts. Cal has plenty of NBA talent coming to the school. He for sure hasn't capitalized on it like we want. This year we have 3.5 guys who can score on anyone or any defense. That is also essential for winning a title. Whoever replaces Cal HAS to be able to bring in NBA level talent, otherwise we get Tubby ball. The only title he won people think it's because of AD. That's only part of the reason. AD was surrounded by the best shooters he had at UK. Otherwise AD would be triple teamed. This team is a better shooting team than that team and also has rim protection. They don't rebound like they should, and we need way more consistency from the forward position (Edwards and Tre).

Obviously, our defense was not good. But am i the only one that noticed we missed 8 shots within 3 feet of the basket in the first 25 minutes of the game. That was all I could stand to watch before i turned the game off. Didn't Sheppard have all 14 of his points in the first half? He only got 1 or 2 shots off in the second half. When you have arguably the 3 best outside shooters in the country in Sheppard, Dillingham and Reeves shouldn't your entire offense be geared around them every time down the floor? I still have hope we can at least have a good showing on the first weekend of the NCAA's but my confidence has been shaken.

Especially when you're going against dynamic guards and it has been proven time and time again this year with good guards consistently dropping 30+ against this defense. I have a theory about why Ky can't guard a pick and roll, they _don't_ run any themselves!! If you don’t use simple pick plays *(THE KIND THEY USE IN GRADE SCHOOL!)* you're not going to be very good guarding them! It's really ironic, for the past two or three seasons Ky's defense has been OK, sorta, they just haven't been able to score. Now this team comes along... I'm 70 in October, I've given up on another championship in my lifetime.

Everything that could have gone wrong went wrong in that game. I don’t think anyone played well outside of Rob, but even he had a handful of bad moments. Got hosed by the refs on a couple calls and no calls, and A&M hit every circus shot possible. But it was probably for the best to get a loss out of the way now. Zero chance we were going to run the table.

It starts in practice. Who did they practice for? Tex A&M played like they had something to play for. You cannot continue to start this starting 5. If you are going to bring in Rob and Reed in two minutes and play from behind, why not start them? Cal could not even show up in team colors. I don't think this mindset is going to clear up in 7 days. As stated from the beginning, defense wins championships. Cal will continue to recruit tall string bean players who cannot play physical. Someone with their eyes open, knows the SEC is a physical conference. I turned the channel when we got down 8 in the 2nd half. Knew we were not coming back. Sad folks.

Yes Wade Taylor was very good and I love Cal but when he has teams with to many good players we can’t make long runs. Cal has to see what everyone else is seeing and Reed needs to start over DJ man he says he Durant promise anyone anything but we’re going to get off to a slow start in the tournament game and that’s going to get us beat and he’s going to waste a crazy talented game . I knew not playing for a week and then playing yesterday hurt us. I’m ok with them losing and everyone giving up on them because that’s when there at the best the double by doesn’t help us. DJ needs to be a bench role player who can’t run the point he can’t no matter who is on the court. I’m afraid this team is going to go down as another great team who underachieved because of coaching and the rotations Cal is playing. I still feel good about the NCAA tournament but Cal has to see what everyone in the country sees that Reed has to get 6 three point attempts a game a 36 min a game at point. Cal is one of the worst coaches for talented athletes that I have ever seen. Cal's disdain for everything SEC shows through his coaching and preparation for these games. If you don't care about winning the SEC tournament, then why care about winning any tournament including the NCAA tournament. This shows through his performance over the past several years and will continue to persist as long as he is coaching UK. Two weeks ago I said we would win out the regular season and lose in the SEC tourney, but make the FF. I stand by that, and I still think we win it all. I thought we would lose on the 2nd day of the tournament, not the first. The only thing to be concerned about are the 17 (!!) lay ups we gave up after having fixed that problem about two thirds of the way through the regular season. A+M was hot from outside, WAY hotter than their norm, and that is going to happen, but the 34+ points on lay ups just can't be over come. The good news is the NCAA has shown us year after year that they don't care at all about conference tournaments. Lose early, still get a high seed. Win it all, still get a low seed. UT, Alabama and UK are all out, yet I still think they all go far in the tournament. The one thing I really wish Cal would do is stop with this trash starting line up which spots the other team 5-10 points EVERY single game. BTW, I RARELY complain about refs but they truly cost us about 10 points tonight. We'll still roll through the tournament that matters. You'll see.

@@clearviewtechnical That's going to be true for every team in the tournament. Last year's FF was a 4, 4, 5 and 9 seed. But I bet you hope they lose, because that's what "fans" like you do. Kansas lost by thirty TWICE this year. Houston struggles to score 60 every single night. Purdue wins by 5 at most on any given night. Duke and Creighton just lost. UK has more upside than any team in the field, and you will cheer against them.
