***** It's actually called a crop and they're not made the way they used to be. Furthermore, horses are checked after races to insure that there has been no injury resulting from its use. From what I can see, most of the time it hits the blanket anyway. The crack of it is usually what gets there attention more than any kind of pain. Get over yourself.

People will knock the slow time as a reason Chrome might lose the Preakness. But really Chrome was just stalking the pace horses in this race. If the pace horses had run faster, so would have Chrome. And Chrome still would have won.

Chrome is an excellent horse--nothing compared to the greats, but the best in the Derby field or any races before, for that matter. And if he wins the TC--what a story behind it! A horse of mediocre parentage and two ordinary blokes as far from the racing blue-bloods as possible!

Belmont is a hard race for any horse, Derby is 2000meters, Preakness is 1911m and the Belmont is 2400m, Curve was coming at the end, if that was the Belmont Curve would have caught Chrome, but here's hoping we finally get a TC winner 36 years is too long..

If Commanding Curve runs in the Belmont, then you can forget about a Triple Crown winner again this year. If he didn't have such a hard trip in The Derby, he would have won easily. When Curve wins The Belmont make sure you come back and say that a boy Dman!!

Only 2 horses have broken 2 minutes in the Kentucky Derby. Secretariat and Monarchos. Northern Dancer has the 3rd fastest followed by Sham. Think about it...140 Kentucky Derby races, hundreds of racehorses in 140 years and ONLY 2 broke 2 minutes. Pretty amazing.

CC did make this one look easy. Don't know who can beat him in the Preakness but, there is a strong possibility that he'll suffer the same kind of defeat as Smarty Jones did in The Belmont.

I won pretty big with Commanding Curve. Put him in an exacta with the obvious winner Cali Chrome and then I even made a bet for Commanding Curve to "place". How'd I figure it out? Well Commanding Curve's best race came from the single time he ran 1 1/8 mile instead of the 1 1/16 mile he'd been previously doing. So the Derby is 1 1/4 mile and I assumed that he'd do even better with a longer distance and that's exactly what he did ;D

I'm by no means an expert, having only taken in interest in thoroughbred racing in the past couple of years, but pay attention to what Commanding Curve did in this race. He was last for what looked like over half of the race and started to make his move into the final turn, with more than half the race completed (take a look at the split screen and the distance and field graphics). He steadily but quickly made up ground -- from last to second place. Like I said I'm not an expert, but I thought that was pretty impressive. I wouldn't count him out for the Preakness or the Belmont, especially the Belmont. If he can finish second a length and a half behind, after making up that much ground in that amount of time, I'm not so sure that California Chrome can hold him off for that extra quarter mile in the Belmont, and he may be able to pull an upset in the Preakness. I hope I see another triple crown winner before I leave this earth, but I'm not so sure that Chrome is going to pull it off. Like I said, I'm no expert, and I could be completely wrong in my analysis, but I'm not counting him out in the next two races. Comments and perspective, anyone? I would very much like to hear them.

The Kentucky Derby is always an easy race to pick. Orb was a good bet last year too. Everyone thought CC would win - surprised he started 5/2! The newspapers of course had to invent reasons as to why not, but they always do. By the way, there is only one certainty in racing - it is called Wise Dan.

or you could just call the exacta like me and turn $5 into $850. It'd take a $122 "Win" bet on California Chrome just to make $854. California Chrome was obviously going to win, so try to pick all the horses behind him if you really want to make money

Blakestefer You would have to have 7/1 to bet $122 to make $854. He was that, but at ante-post long before the actual race. As for turning $5 inti $850, you would have had to have picked the exacta, which would be extremely difficult. You obviously did it. Most couldn't though.

I wouldn't be so sure. CC has Princequillo and other stayers all over the place on both sides of his pedigree. I'm tellin' ya, he's a 'throwback' to earlier genes. Don't count him out for the Belmont.

kwgrid Agreed. Commanding Curve is like Alydar to Affirmed, always the bridemaid. It should be a great tussle between the two CCs! I expect the next two to be much closer, with the two CCs fighting it out in the Belmont and CC (California) winning BY A NOSE from the other CC.

SugarTomAppleRoger The two CC's should guarantee an interesting Preakness. I still don't like fresh horses being allowed in the last two legs, but I've been advised in the last few minutes by my highly knowledgeable on the subject bro-in-law that fresh horses have always been allowed in the Preakness, but it's actually a benefit to have run in the Derby before the Preakness. It's after that when horses in those first two legs start to flatten out. So I still say fresh horses shouldn't be allowed in the Belmont at least. I think they have should have run at least one of the first two legs. mho

kwgrid It's nonsensical to suggest fresh horses should be denied the opportunity to run in ANY leg of the Triple Crown, whether it be the Derby, Preakness or Belmont. It's wrong on so many levels. What if a truly fantastic horse were injured and couldn't participate in the first two, but was ready for the Belmont? Should that horse be denied? What if a horse didn't blossom until Preakness or Belmont time? Should that horse be denied? What if a horse typically runs at Pimlico or Belmont and their owner/trainer wants them to run where they are comfortable? Should they be denied? And most importantly, the Triple Crown is the most difficult feat in horse racing for a reason. Any horse worthy of the crown must beat all comers, whether old rivals or fresh new opponents. Your suggestion would make things easier for any Triple Crown candidate, and that is not and has never been the purpose of the TC. I don't even understand your comment at all. These races are open to any horses that meet the requirements. Always have been, always will be and always should be. These races may be called the Triple Crown races, but they are still SEPARATE races in their own rite.

non jones Most horses seem to have a problem with the length of the Belmont or the tight turns of the Preakness. That's why I loved the 1973 Preakness so much...watching Secretariat overpower them after the 1st turn from the outside going from last to first position..and staying in front. What incredible speed & endurance. His powerful strides awed all of the jockeys back then.

Horses today are non-descript & slow. Secretariat was in LAST position & still set the fastest time in KD history. Only 2 horses have broken 2 min. I don't watch the TC anymore. No horse will ever match Secretariat. 41 years have proven that. He still holds ALL 3 TC records. That was back in 1973. He is also the ONLY athlete in history that INCREASED his speed throughout an entire race to set the track record. No human or horse has ever matched that feat. It will never happen again. I'm just glad it was recorded!:-)

Secretariat just happened to be the full-meal-deal. He had conformation, constitution, speed, stamina, attitude/mind, a literal and figurative large heart, a love of running, a great trainer that came to understand what he needed (hard works), and a jockey that didn't screw it up. That's a once-in-a-lifetime combination.

i watch about roughly 8 hrs of racing a day an this derby just seemed like a regular race with a merely strong favorite as the winner it didn't have that derby feel to it this year. this year had a weaker field,pace was slow this year.i wanted to see a three four horse duel.figured someone would wanna test the chrome instead they let him ease away.oh well good luck to em :) ill be betting against him the whole way if he makes the triple crown run i will see next Saturday if he does what he did today i will give chrome his respect.why do we call the derby the biggest race when the Belmont stakes is really the biggest race cause that defines the triple crown winner?

Any horse winning the Trip Crwn is unlikely. But maybe CalChrome can do it - I like him! Belmont is tough I am sure after the stress of Derby + Preakness. CalChrome seems to be a determined little guy - I hope he gets it! He's Seattle Slew-like (IMHO)

California Chrome had the perfect trip (broke ell, near the front and a slow pace) that assisted him taking The Derby but it is obvious that he wasn't the most impressive horse. Commanding Curve started running diagonally from the 17th spot to the rail, was dead last at the first turn, then made a heroic charge from the back only to miss the leader by a few lengths. If the race was another 1/16th longer Commanding Curve would have won easily. I think Chrome will win The Belmont easily and with a better post position and rice will take The Preakness. Remember, you heard it here 1st!!

I agree, ComCrv seemed to be gaining on CalChrome at the close. so maybe a strong distance runner could take CalChrome? BTW, I hope CalChrm wins the Trip Crown - he's worked HARD in all his races. Seattle Slew seemed to slow down at the end of his Derby - but he WON! maybe CalChrm is the next SSlew?

hello I don't think Cal. Chrome will win the Belmont if Commanding Curve runs and gets a better trip than he had in The Derby, Plus The Bemont is a longer trip. Everyone wants to see a Triple Crown winner.. Seattle Slew is one of the greatest horses of all time and Cal. Chrome has to win more even to be named with him.

Desoxyn Man well I agree SSLew is a great racehorse, a great sire. I Love SSlew! But SS was considered somewhat 'low brow' before he completed his Trip Crown & became a super-sire. PLUS, SSlew was 'west coast' not a Southern blue-blood. I think my assessment is reasonable. Of course it is TBD whether CalChrome can win Belmont. IF CC gets the win, and is our 1st Trip Crn winner since Affirmed, you can congratulate me on my prescient analysis.

If California Chrome had gone as slow as CC for the first 3 quarters, CC would never have caught him. Also is CC had gone as fast as California Chrome for the first 3 quarters he would have had nothing left in the stretch.

Venckman You make an interesting point and it is both wrong and right, let me explain. You are wrong in that Secretariat would have beaten Monarchos' by about 2 lengths not a neck even though Monarchos had the benefit of stakes record fractions and was sitting back in the field early on. However you are right when you infer that Secretariat was a much superior horse than Monarchos.

Running 2nd in the Derby is easier than winning, for the closers. They sit back and save ground and make one big move trying to weave thru traffic or go wide around every horse. Everyone views their performance as great and what if blah blah blah. 2013 runner up never did anything after, 2012 was a freak in Bodemiester but was not a closer, 2011 was Nehro nothing after, 2010 , Ice box nothing after, 2009 Pioneer of the nile , 2008 RIP Eight Belles 2007 Hard Spun but was a front runner. 2006 Bluegrass Cat, 2005 Closing Argument..... My pick was Wildcat Red who was finished before the decent camera angles started being shown so I am no Expert handicapper just pointing out the truth about the big closing finishes that are illusions to those that competed and tired or had a bad trip... Dont go wasting money on Commanding Curve in the Preakness.
