Kenwood DMX906S with Wireless Apple Car Play in a 2009 Subaru Outback Limited

In this video I install a Kenwood DMX906S with wireless Apple Car Play into a 2009 Subaru Outback Limited with electronic climate control, Harman Kardon factory amplifier, 6 speakers and a dual voice coil subwoofer. You will see me remove the factory head unit with integrated climate control and install a JDM kit with a Kenwood climate control unit that is only available in Japan. I fabricate a harness that includes 3 partial harnesses from AE64.com, an Axxess ASWC-1 steering wheel button integration unit, a Kenwood KNA-SPM100 speed pulse generator and a back up camera.

The kenwood gps antenna is needed because they use the kenwood gps antenna if signal is good, if it's not, they activate the smartphone antenna. Check gps logo on android phone, if you drive into a tunnel it's going to be active, otherwise not. This to save battery when the phone in connected wireless and it's not charging then

You can with some extra work. I set up steering wheel controls/steering wheel and paddle shifters on my 2005 and created some write-ups for certain aspects of the job

Some time after watching this, I now have a 907s in my 05 OBXT. Never bought a kit, I bought 2 units from Lithuania on eBay, butchered them and my stock unit, made 3 versions before final of abs welded and carbon fiber covered bezel/ controls. After this, I learned all the kits used on LH drive cars don't line up right. They do if you cut the abs from 2 units, and fuse them together.

Fantastic video, about to tackle this project on my XT with a Sony radio. Wish you showed a little more detail on the steering wheel controls though. There's one wire from the Axxess that I can't quite figure out where it will need to go before opening everything up - seems like it needs to connect to the i88 connector but I'm not clear on what the other connections on that are.

I found the double DIN adapter kit that you purchased. I only want to install that and have the ability also of putting a double din stereo in my car. Do I need any special type of adapter or wire harness to be able to get this lower portion (climate control new unit) to work with what was originally in the car? If I do can you guide me where I need to go to get that harness?

I got the exact same setup but My Kenwood climate control Adapter doesn’t work on my car at all. Plugs in properly but screen won’t even turn on and none of the controls do anything. Anyone have any ideas why?? 2006 Subaru Outback - dual zone climate control.

Can your steering wheel controls skip songs on your 906s while using Pandora, wireless CarPlay, and being on your head units Home Screen rather than the CarPlay screen?

I would say it’s better than the lower mounted camera on my newer car, that back of station wagons does get dirty from the airflow pattern back there

Wow, I've been searching for a priceless set up just like this ! Hi, my name is Richard, I'm a 58 year old mechanic (ASE Master Tech) from Vermont. I've been custom building Classic-cars, Hot-Rods, Harleys, Off-Road Trucks, and now at the age of 58, Turbo Subaru's ! Ha ! Ha ! Its always something ! Ha ! Ha ! I know this is an older video you posted 3-1/2 years ago November 2019, but I would LOVE to make this swap in my newly purchased 2007 Outback XT, Limited ! Are all these contacts & aftermarket parts still available do you know !? Of course I'll be checking into them immediately Ha ! Ha ! I just wanted to make friendly contact w/you because that's the kind & considerate thing to do when someone as kind & considerate as yourself who goes to these great lengths and then offers all the awesome info he finds to others on KZbin, is respectful for sure ! Especially a "How-to" video, that is looks to be done CORRECTLY! My only remaining concern is how does the new Kenwood head-unit sound, in comparison to the HK head-unit, now that the Harmon-Karmen system is history !?? Does it sound better !? Are the sound controls on the Kenwood better than the HK !? I ask simply because the HK system was matched-up to the Amp under the seat & for an OEM sound-system, it sounds excellent. Especially the Mid & Bass levels & their controls ! The Kenwood is NOT matched up to the amp under the passenger seat. I guess I need to check the Kenwood DMX906S' spec's out & compare to the OEM HK head-units spec's to see how they match up. I NEED a good sounding system ! And these Harmen-Kardon head-units set a great sound-standard for an Outback for Gods sake, and are hands down excellent sound quality for being an OEM head-unit in a Subaru Outback ! (Limited) So, I definitely don't want to go down in sound quality by installing this same Kenwood head-unit. So, it sure would be nice to hear back from you. steering wheel audio controls work? you didn't show it

Yes it does work. That Axxess ASWC really does detect the car and head unit on first power-up and self programs. It signals all that via LED blinks. Kenwood is different from other brands on how it connects to Axxess box with a single wire. Other brands have a dedicated remote control connector.

Of course a JDM part will be reversed from a USDM they drive on the right side of the car. That’s good that it converts Celsius to Fahrenheit so I don’t have to
