Hi! What is the type of zinc plating solution do you use? Amazing work!
@compulsivediy80363 ай бұрын
It is a commercial product from Caswell Plating, the exact formula is a Caswell trade secret especially the brightner that adds shine. It lasts forever, it is not really consumed, except for the "brightener" that is a trade secret but it not expensive and is used by the teaspoon. The secret brightner is likely an organic polymer. (Starch-like stuff) Caswell Zink bath part A and B is a proprietary form of well known acidic, Cyanide-Free zinc plating bath. It usually contains: Zinc chloride, ammonium chloride, potassium chloride, sodium benzoate and surfactants. pH is adjusted to 5.5 with hydrochloric acid. (Which I have to add a little as pH drifts up) There is a lot of ingredients, so Caswell proprietary formula is convenient for a hobbyist. It is like making you own Mayonnaise, you can do it; but the recipe is complex and you will have a gallon of leftover egg whites.

3:14 a word about responsible chemical disposal. You can grab all your chemicals and throw them into hydrochloric acid (or aqua regia if you are serious about the environment) and once it is all dissolved you go to the sea (or ocean near by) and throw it all there, preferably away from the beach. If there is 4.5 billion tons of uranium in sea water already, your waste isn't going to make the water more polluted than it is right now.

The climate switch and faceplate is a Subaru part - G3017AG01 Climate Switch. This was for Japan Domestic Market only and I had to order it from a Japanese vendor with an English website that shipped here. The Kenwood to Subaru harness was made by a shop that no longer exists but these are available from Car audio shops.

Awesome video! However, I’ve been struggling to get the plating results come out as a smooth chrome finish and not matte and dull/chalky as some OEM style German automotive hardware. It wasn’t until I added up to the WHOLE bottle of zinc brightener where I started to notice satisfactory results. Do you have any information regarding how to achieve a bright and smooth zinc plating result?
@compulsivediy80363 ай бұрын
Surface Prep, Surface Prep, it will add hours, sandblasting with multiple grits, sanding polishing etc. Zinc is very thin. With Nickel and Chrome they deposit a thick layer that they polish after, With zinc it is all part prep.

Great job with this presentation. I’m currently restoring my old 1950 Dodge Power Wagon. Fortunately, most of my original fasteners are in restorable condition and I was careful to group and label them in plastic food containers as I disassembled the truck several years ago. Many of the original fasteners and details are either not available or are $pendy to replace so this process will pay for itself in this one project. Thank you.

i guess i'm kind of as interested in your opinion of why these are selling for so much, is it because of an alternate use case for them? or is it because of something like people buying poor quality balancers from like HF etc and still wanting to DIY but wanting something slightly better? (which doesnt make a ton of sense but is the only other option i could think of at the moment)
@compulsivediy80369 ай бұрын
I agree, people want to balance at home but dread HF quality. I got this balancer for this reason when they went for $200 and it seemed like a very questionable expenditure, and now they are approaching $500. This does not work with modern high offset aluminum wheels and good modern tires. Not only it doesn’t balance dynamically, it is just not sensitive enough for light weights that are used on modern wheels.
@chilimax212 ай бұрын
I disagree with this. I have one similar to this coats. I solved my steering wheel shake with it that two tire shops couldn't.

Are you on the Langmuir forums at all? I second the question about the stl, and also, the design is great, I’m assuming you kind of have to put the lasers inside the shroud but does this get the lenses all dirty and full of stuff?
@compulsivediy803610 ай бұрын
Yes they have to be inside, otherwise you would have to have large arms holding then far away. They get wet if the torch is off the work at the end of the cut, which depends on many factors. They stay surprisingly clean during cutting. I thought the lenses would get sandblasted in there but they don't. I use scrap pieces of sheet Al to reduce splashing in general in a small garage.

What size hole did you drill and what size dimple die did you use?
@compulsivediy80369 ай бұрын
I think it was 2.25", but I am going from flawed memory. I believe I used a 2.5" Swag Off Road dimple die and the fit was not great but is still not leaking years later due to generous silicone and lack of pressure. The bar sink drain size is odd, bigger than bathroom sink but smaller than 3.5" kitchen drains.

I find that the stock plastic Brompton 1sp or 3speed chain tensioner (not the 2sp or 6 speed, which is shown in this video) works perfectly with my Vostok Brompton, as long as I use the Jtek Brompton Chain Tensioner Insert - For Rohloff / QR Hubs.

I have some areas where it's not practical to use my rider & Cyclone Rake to pick up leaves. In that situation, I've found it to be a lot faster to lay the pickup hose on the ground and just rake or blow the leaves to the hose laying on the ground. Just a thought, as sometimes time is limited to get the job done.

One thing to remember with any sort of tumbling: you need "flow". This refers to the media being transported across the part surfaces at a reasonable travel speed to actually cut, not just skip across the surface. In this case, I would have started with 1/2 the media he used, as it weighs significantly more than the parts. You need it to actually tumble, not just jiggle around. The parts must be turned over and over, end over end, allowing for media to travel in all directions due to the natural irregular flow of the media itself. With proper media circulation, your "couple of hours" can literally be 20-30mins of run time, if the media is actually moving. You need it to churn, just like with a blender, bottom up and around the sides, combing back down into the middle.
