Worked great. Made my first ISS contact via APRS today following this video.

Another great video. Since I guess some settings for the ISS and the regular APRS are different I think I'll leave my D74 alone and set up my THd-72 for ISS. Thanks Don.

Awesome! Glad someone finally made a video that’s clear and concise. There’s several other videos on setting this up, but lots of hot air and nobody else I’ve come across that clearly shows every setting that needs to be changed and the recommended values. Not that ARISS is incorrect, but I’ve made more contacts using RS0ISS as the path as I’ve found far more stations are also using RS0ISS - more than are using ARISS. Ive also run into cases where my beacon wasn’t digipeated by the ISS when using ARISS but always is when I use RS0ISS. That’s just been my personal experience.

Jeff Hochberg I’ve made many dozens of contacts using ARISS. It’s a good alias for PSAT as well. The key is beaconing as often as possible to capture the digipeater. If you snooze you lose.

Jerry Bowers take a look at ariss.net. I took a random sampling of raw packet data from about 20 or so stations this morning. Only 2 of them used ARISS in the path settings. There were two others that used some nonsense paths I’ve never seen before. All of the rest were using RS0ISS. Please don’t misinterpret what I’m saying - using ARISS is not incorrect but you will only heat packets for other stations using the same path. When the number of stations using RS0ISS outnumbers the others by 8:1 or so. Some use both RS0ISS and ARISS. I’m not quite sure what kind of results you’d have if you do that. I would think that works against you since your packets would need to be tagged with both, but it’s worth trying out. I took only one random sampling but I’m going to try to keep track of them for a few more days to see if I see the same trend. I would encourage you to do the same. For those that don’t know how to find the raw packet information, simply click on a station’s callsign on the front page of ariss.net, then click “raw APRS data” on the next page. The first string of characters is the callsign (of course) and the next string of characters is the path the station used in their configuration.

@@JeffHochberg I read all of WB4APR and he says the APRS sats will respond to ARISS. I tried both and I seem to get more from ARISS.

Thanks much Don and this is just what I was looking for. But I started using it and ran into issues. Regarding the video: 510 = "Auto, 30 minutes" should be 510 = Auto and 511 = 30 minutes. The way you are using BCON would 510 = Manual give the same results? Regarding the provided 7/18/20 ISS_Default_Settings.d74 file: After a Full Reset and importing it into D74A firmware v1.10 (10/30/19, the latest version when the video was posted) I checked its settings against the video and they are different. 510 = Manual (not Auto). 511 = 1 min (not 30). 514 = On (not Off). 903 = ISS Profile (not ISS). 904 = Date (not GPS(GS)). 941 = GPS (not SQL). In each case, is the video or the default file correct? Also the comments for using the provided configuration file should include adding email address to the 503 message. [Added after initial posting: The provided .d74 file also has 504 = RS0ISS (not ARISS) and 507 = Busy (not Detect Data).]

Hey Don! I am successfully “hitting” the APRS digi on the ISS using the setup you offered. Only problem is, I don’t see any stations on LIST on my D74. They don’t populate there although I see the P and oM station info as they are digipeated. I see my call on ARISS.net after a pass. So, that confirms the contact. Also, what does the No Sym Yet next to my call sign mean on ARISS.net heard recently? 73! Pete KD4QNA

Is the ARISS aprs offline indefinitely? Saw the update on the ISS radio situation on the ARISS website. My arrow shows up tomorrow. Bad timing.

I am blind, and just wondering, because I thought I heard some things, the Kenwood HT might talk to me! Does this really have EMBED speech? Will it tell me all the settings?
