I have the D-710 radio for more than 10 years. D-700 for 10 years before that. I never bothered to enter the names to the repeater part. Most of the time I just used them in VFO mode. Now I can enter the names, make my life easier. I was under the impression you have to have software to program the names into the memory. Thanks for the video!

I was reading some of the comments! Some people asking how good is the D-700 / D-710 or the D-710G. I bought the D-700 when it entered the market in the year of 2000. That was 19 years ago. This radio was set up in APRS mode in Toronto running 24 hours. Once each year I took it a part and cleaned the dust inside. About 5-6 times I had to replace the cooling fan. Not surprise the fan was constantly turning on and off with each transmission. I had no issues with this radio. This year I sold my D-700 for 200 dollars. The only reason I sold it because my friend of my wanted it badly. He is very happy with this radio (LOOKS LIKE BRAND NEW) About 10 years ago I purchased a D-710 never installed in the car, used it as a base station in a condominium on the 29th floor. My dual band antenna was on the roof at the shore of Lake Ontario. I was allowed to install only one antenna and because of that I had to use a coax switch. One input from the antenna and four out put to four different radios. I had a good chance to test out different radios (WITH THE SAME ANTENNA) My two favorite radio was the Kenwood D-710 and the Icom IC-746. Usually I made the long distance calls over Lake Ontario with the ICOM radio because the 746 is putting out 100W. The returning stations weren't using high power most of the times. I was having problems to hear the weak stations, that was the time to switch the antenna to the Kenwood TM-D710 to receive. The Kenwood radio is much more sensitive than ICOM or ALINCO I purchased an ICOM IC-2820H for it's D-star capability. This radio can't come close to the KENWOOD. Four years ago the D-710 started loosing sensitivity. The receiving filters started going and I had to switch from FM to NFM mode to pick up the weak stations. Soon after the NFM was losing sensitivity as well. I had to make a decision to repair the D-710 for 300 dollars or scrap it and get a new one. Than KZbin UNIVERSITY suggested to replace the four ceramic filters. AAAAWWHAT? Can I do that? I ordered the four filters (5 dollars each) and I replaced the defective filters with a new one. Those filter are better than the new ones. In Canada the TM-D710G cost 700 Dollars. One hour labour and 20 Dollars saved me 700 Dollars. I can't comment on the D710G I don't have one but that is going to be my next mobile. I like the idea to have a built in GPS THANKS KZbin! 73' VA3VAD

Thank you so much for presenting this video. I just got the D710G and you made it very easy to program repeaters. You are correct about not really needing to use a PC with the Kenwood MCP-6A program (and required cable).

No Problem Michael, Always happy to help a new HAM out as I did not get any direction from any of the local hams here. Let me know if you have any more questions and I think there are a few good PDF's out there on how to setup APRS properly when you get your GPS in.

I might have considered buying this radio in early 201x to 2015 instead of the Icom 880H. I still have the 880H (works), but I have the FTM400XDR that I bought from HRO online in 2019. Still works. Just haven't installed it in the vehicle. Other things going on right now, so the installation is off to the side for now. Still watching videos to keep up, though. No "Frostfest 2024" in Richmond, Virginia this year. So, I am planning on going to Raleigh, NC "RARSFest" in April 2024.

Welp, I made this video over 10 years ago. Oddly enough I owned a 880h for awhile, it was a great radio. Just difficult to program. This radio is still kicking though in the form of the D710GA. Still a great choice for APRS work.

The programming cable set is worth getting more so the USB FTDI adapter. With it you can connect it to the faceplate and activate digital data/packet modes with a controlling computer.

I noticed that the TM-D710G can scan tones by holding down the tone select key. I haven’t experimented with this feature. Will it locate the required PL tone automatically for a given frequency to open a repeater?

I know this is 5 years old, I am just getting to know this radio since just got the Kenwood TH-D74 and was thinking maybe getting this one because the APRS feature and able to cross band with it; (too bad it does not have DStar) anyways I can not see a better match for the TH-D74; the area I am in is Las Vegas and I have a list with 133 repeaters in the Southern Nevada Repeater List! that is A LOT! my question is do I have to program ALL of them if I am to enjoy max comms possibilities manually in both radios??? or there would be a programming interface to do so instead of manually? 2 repeaters does not seems like a big deal but 133??? Me being new at this I know I want to have them all, lol, just in case; or I just need only one and my radios would pick and program all of the ones it connects to automatically? I know I am registered on the DStar network here but I have not been able to talk to anyone from the TH-D74 except one ham the other day at the local Giga Parts store!

Why is this radio so expensive, I’ve noticed it’s more expensive than the radios like yaesu ftm 400 with the digital modes?! Are you in the Pahrump/Las Vegas Area? I lived in Pahrump and had that same frequency but I believed it was high potosi?

Do you have any experience using this radio with RMS Express? I am pulling my hair out with TNC NOT FOUND messages. :(
@oldpreach3 жыл бұрын
For those that might not know, this radio can act as an aprs digipeater without an external TNC. This is way too much radio for typical Mobile Radio use. If you're not going to use APRS or the crossband repeat feature much, you should go with the less expensive Kenwood tmv 71 I believe the model is.

Great video i watch this over and over again because for this radio the menus are impossible to remember. The menu is poorly thought out, wastes buttons (VFO/MR should have been a toggle not two buttons, huge waste of real-estate), i could go on and on. The radio is brilliantly featured, but again, menu setup layout is not intuitive and if you own multiple radios or don't use this radio a lot you will find yourself lost with this thing every time you use it. I own it because its the only cross band'er that i know of that will CWID for you out of the box. IT also wont do less than 25khz steps in UHF.
