On my 3126B I've found a lot of components I've replaced have had updated part numbers and are vastly different from the old parts I took off. In every case when I've done that, it's fixed the problem and I can see where the changes they made were improvements. The oil pump and oil filter housing are two examples. It's part of why I don't mind spending the money at the Cat dealer to get the latest and greatest. And that "3412" is missing 6 cylinders :)

Had 10 trucks used for heavy haul with C12s. They all needed cylinder packs around 350,000 miles. Cat changed something in the computer and some went to a million miles after that. The biggest issue we had was leaking front structures. The steel plate to block behind the front motor mount would leak. Those were traded in for C15 powered tractors.

never saw much advantage of a c12 over a c15 overhaul prices sometimes higher....in most applications fuel mileage not much better

The c12 had a thunderously loud jake, compared to the c15. The turbo seemed louder. These had really good power. Cons: they burned oil; got mediocre fuel economy, and had longevity issues. I remember there was an issue with Rod issues blowing holes in the blocks.

I'm certainly not going to say you're wrong for this application, but some uses of RTV (which vulcanizes at room temperature) specify a cure time before you tighten to final torque. If you over-tighten before it's cured (or partially cured), you effectively just squeeze it out of the joint. So you *may* get less leaks if you install and tighten to 1/2 way, and then come back after lunch and torque to spec. Again, I've seen that on RTV and other sealants like Honda-Bond... but not claiming to be an expert.

Seen the relief valve stick in the FTP, I always check it. When Cat came out with the new design FTP, did not have the updated line. Had to fabricate a fitting to make it work. Coolant in the oil on these. Replace water pump first, if that don't fix it, replace head gasket. Two styles of head gasket depends on head and block design. I would call Cat and tell them you only got half of your replacement engine.

I don't do diesels anymore, so it's always fun for me to watch your diagnostic logic and the little tricks of the trade, like the RTV silly cone gel getting hard while eating burgers and pizza. Those air bag jacks look so simple, but I wonder about their reliability. A truck airbag is one thing, but a cheap Chinese knockoff airbag attached to a cheap Chinese metal contraption is a horse of a different color. Keep safety in mind when using new tools and equipment. Put a few drops of engine oil on the exhaust manifold for a quick check of coolant in the oil. If it bubbles- coolant. If it lies there and smokes, all good.

if you suspected a coolant leak you should have done the head bolt check for a leaking head gasket, the key way appeared to be sheared on the fuel pump drive gear, any time you have the valve cover off on a c12 you should inspect the cam followers, especially number two cylinder.

Take the gears off the shafts in the transfer pump, keys or gear should be worn if they have that much movement. Look in side of the gears slot probably enlarged.

A shortcut for paint overspray masking: use aluminum foil to wrap hoses, belts, etc… Easy on and easy off.

With the fuel pump, i had one on a Detroit 60 series that had close to 1/4 turn of slop in it. 😅 replaced it and truck fired right up perfectly

Some of the coolant canisters do have fine screens in them to catch casting sand and other debris in addition to the extender pellets. Some does not mean all obviously.

The oil level issue could be if the engine was cold and the level was checked too soon after it had been running. It sometimes takes an eternity for cold oil to come back to the oil tray in some engines.

I have got a Toyota Landcruiser with a 1HDFTE motor and if you check the oil after it has been going it will be off the stick. Check it when it is cold ( over night ) and it will be on the full mark. Can catch you out when doing oil changes too but I know exactly how much to put in it and check it tomorrow to make sure it is right. Jeff

Oh C10s and C12s I hate them so much. I had 2 trucks with them and the oil leaks out of the front structure and it cracking near the compressor and the cam followers killing the cam. I'm glad i got rid of them

I just started a diesel mechanic job about 4 months working on school busses with no knowledge about mechanics really in general and they know this. I typically won't get any engine experience unless something were to go wrong and then i get to learn. When you were manually turning the pump gears showing the slop, the bottom gear is moving on the shaft, shaft not turning, looks like it's keyed. Bet that key is nearly sheared for some reason.

Green antifreeze? Maybe perforation of liners or erosion of o-rings on liners. I have never seen correct green coolant for diesel engines. I could be wrong but my coolant was always red. Isn't a 3412 a marine engine of fairly high horsepower.

Some of our compact equipment with 3 bangers or little 2.4lit, 4 cylinders will take the green stuff. Light plants, gensets etc...

All your triaxle dump trucks near you have 20 thousand pound steer axles. And yes that’s what they weigh on that axle when you lift the axle to make turns. But that’s fully loaded. Empty ways around 5 ton. So I’m not so sure why the guy in the video thinks that unloaded truck steer axle weighs that much. Must be covering for the vevor company. Those air jacks can’t even lift 5 ton but he covered for them and claimed that steer axle weighs a lot more. Bs. Garbage jack
