Kenya: Military Chief Among 10 Killed in Helicopter Crash | Firstpost America
Kenyan Military Chief, General Francis Omondi Ogolla, has died in a helicopter crash in the northwest of the country. Along with him, 11 other military personnel were onboard the chopper. While nine of the officers also passed away, two managed to survive. Kenyan President William Ruto has declared three days of national mourning. He also called Ogolla's demise his "personal loss" and hailed the military chief for his nearly 40 years of service. Ogolla was appointed the Chief of Defence Forces in April last year. He also served as the top military adviser to the president. The Kenyan Air Force has launched a probe into the incident to discover the cause of the crash. Meanwhile, Kenyan media reported that this was the fifth chopper crash in the country in the last 12 months.

He appointed him because he had no option. He found his hands tied by the David Tonje rules of succession. So what means could be applied to get him out of that position? A month or so before, he appointed some deputy who likely is in line for succession. It raises questions. hIt's the darkest 5 years the country is going through. There's a certain video whereby he says the following, "General Ogolla was among the people who tried to overturn my victory at Bomas." He then goes on to claim about how he still gave him the job because of his qualifications but in reality that's not the case. There are some succession rules that are called the Tonje rules which have been followed by former presidents Kibaki and Uhuru which if he could have ignored and appointed somebody else the military could have a poor chemistry with him threatening a coup thus leaving him with no option. But it looks like he later on found an elimination method.

Just some clarity, the president didn’t have any option rather than appoint him because the Kenyan military has internal standing orders regarding the selection of the country’s Military Chief. Basically, it’s a rotational system that sees the position change smoothly among the three military units (i.e, the Army, Airforce, and Navy). You don't understand this things...this kind of helicopters have been in production since 1950s to 1987..they were later upgraded to have digital cockpits . Though I agree they are old , assuming this was of the last batch of 87 ,.giving it 37yrs would be a possible way to know its airworthiness.
