✵✵✵✵✵ Kepler's Third Law of Motion
LAW OF PERIODS (Astronomy)
Kepler’s 3rd Law is sometimes called The Law of Periods: The square of the period of any planet is proportional to the cube of the semimajor axis of its orbit.
In this video, we derive Kepler’s Third Law from Newton’s Law of Gravitation.
We also show you how to use this law to determine the orbit of Mars around the Sun.
Finally, we apply Kepler’s Third law to the Moon’s orbit around the Earth, using it to calculate the mass of the Earth.

Great video as usual. As Feynman explained, to weight the earth (and everything else) you need to estimate the gravitational constant first. This had to be done with an experiment in the lab. This is advertisement for the Feynman lectures that are one of the very few videos on youtube that are even better than Socratica (if you can imagine such a thing).

@russellteejaymolina6736
@russellteejaymolina6736 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah that was a little bit confusing, did she mean that the earth was orbiting the sun in an elliptical but the sun is exactly at the middle, right on the spot where the major axis and minor axis crossed and not located at one of the foci. Kind weird derivation but it still resulted in the right equation?

Does Kepler’s 3rd Law only applies for planetary motion? Can same law by used on a molecular or even atomic level? Let assume you could make an abstract comparison between the Solar System and the 5 States of Matter? (example: H²O) 1) Surface Sun: (Center of Solar System) = Plasma (5000 Kelvin) 2) Venus: (Inner HZ boundary) gas phase -> liquid phase (condensation) 3) Earth: (HZ) liquid phase (radius = 1AU) 4) Mars: (outer HZ boundary) liquid phase -> solid phase (freezing) 5) Pluto: (Solar System Boundary) BEC phase (~0 Kelvin) (just a idea ...)

One complaint here, the solar system diagram at 1:00 shows the planets moving in the opposite speed to radius relationship they really have. The diagram shows Mercury moving very slowly and the outer planets moving very fast. It should be the other way around, planets move with v ~ 1/(r)^1/2 so the inner planets move faster

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought Kepler's 3rd Law of Planetary Motion says the P^2 = "C"a^3; not P^2=a^3. He knew there was some constant "C" that needed to be multiplied, but that wasn't discovered until Newton's Law of Universal Gravitation.
