It’s like an auditory flashback to my favorite 90’s albums in one snare sound. Love it! Smaller black iron low tuning and larger 14x7 black iron high tuning were my faves. I also can’t believe the 14 x 8 black iron at higher tuning, so musical

I have a 6x14 10 lug Stainless Keppy as my main and let me tell you, I can't stop playing this snare drum. Even my spares are great snares (LM402 and Gretsch Copper 6.5x14) but I know the gig will go well because of that snare. It's insane to think this way about a drum, but I do. I'd like to get a Black Iron, probably 7x14 8-lug with Tama Linear Drive strainer (if you send Gregg your lever and butt of choice, he will install it for you).

They all sound amazing, low or high tuning, but the low tunings on the 7 and 8 inch models seem to really work. And I usually prefer medium to higher tunings. That said the 4x14 oddly enough I think was my favorite with the 7x14 (black iron) a close second. Actually,...the 5.5x14 was great too - ugh. I must have one.

My most favourites were the 7"x14" and 8"x14" black iron and stainless steel snares on the lower tuning. If it could ever be possible, I would love to have an 8"x14" black iron Keplinger snare, BUT...done in the style of a Pearl Free Floater snare with the shell free-floating without any hardware fastened to it. Imagine that! A Pearl/Keplinger black iron Free Floater in 8"x14" - Limited Edition! Think of the possibilities.

Just something about quality steel snares...always confused me how the general consensus in drum land that steel was always low down in the desirability contest again brass bronze copper etc.... A quality steel snare tuned med high has just "that" bright balanced colourful tone thats "the" metal snare sound!! No mistaking it..just beautiful.
