Ukraine has their eyes on how to make the bridge dysfunctional but finding a surefire solution is really problematic. Bridges are not easily destroyed by military weapons available. It takes either a great bunker buster bomb dropped by a bomber or a series of many hits in the right place to take down a bridge like this. The third choice leaves the main structure and only takes out one section which can be easily replaced. In itself being such a behemoth, it is its own protection because of the impractical might that would have to be brought to bring it to the ground (water in this case). It may simply be too difficult and too costly to destroy which is a certain amount of protection without doing anything.

Clearly it was premeditated
