Kerem Mamyakmaz speaks as third opposition on Thursday 29th February 2024 at 7:30pm in the Debating Chamber.
Despite its origins in 19th and 20th Century politics, a fierce debate has been raging over the applicability of Marxism to an era in which production is shifting beyond its industrial roots. Despite the end of the Cold War, record numbers of young people are now identifying as Marxists.
With growing questions surrounding the increasing inequality and alienation being sown by new technologies, perhaps it is time to reappraise Marxist ideals? Or are the Marxists of the 21st Century doomed to repeat the totalitarian mistakes of their 20th century predecessors?

Feels like throwing out the baby with the bathwater. At it's core Marixsm is a critique of class-dynamics and capitalism imo. Class-dynamics that have changed very little in the last 150 years, and in recent years seem to be regressing to how they were in 19th century. Marxism is more relevant now as compared to the mid 20th century I think. But that might just be due to how I personally understand 'Marxism' and therefor be a semantic difference.
