He merely said, "I can't control the box office or reviews. I can, however, control how I make it." That seems like the healthiest way to view it.

I love it when the interviewees get prickly.

Thank you 'badhead' for uploading this Andrew Stanton interview with Kermode & Mayo. Stanton is an amazing interviewee.

If Tommy Wiseau can manage to put a film together for 5 million dollars(!!), I think anyone can.

Maybe he meant Back To The Future 3, he was originally talking about trilogies generally containing one rubbish part.

He didn't say that though, he said "HE wouldn't know what to do with $5 million", big difference.

He couldn't make John Carter for $5 million?!? Wasn't $5 million the entire budget for Duncan Jones' Moon?
@121jakethesnake12 жыл бұрын
He's saying that he personally wouldn't know how to make a movie with that little money and that's understandable since he's only directed high-budgeted flicks.

Or Star Wars...Or even Stantons previous film WALL-E, which we know nobody saw.

@PhoenixWright101 Now that Pixar's halo has slipped a bit, people have started having a pop at that "we make movies for ourselves" mantra. Yet before, when they were churning out hit after hit, it was being praised as the proper attitude.

Also, on the list of fifty highest grossing movies ever, sci fi movies are number 1, 4, 9, 20, 27, 28, 29, 31, 34, 35, 37, 38, 42, and 45, and most of the rest are similar things like fantasy, superheroes, and computer animated films. Plus, the number 1 grossing film by a mile is Avatar, which is practically the same thing as John Carter (they're both science fiction fantasy films about a soldier from Earth who becomes a hero on another planet).

I had hopes for a Pixar man turned live action director since Brad Bird did so well with Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol.
@butt0112 жыл бұрын
Nope. Read an interview of Nolan himself stating it was 3M.
@PhoenixWright10113 жыл бұрын
@RockBottomRiser21 I think Stanton has been getting a hard time from the industry press/websites about the budget, the title change, his inexperience as a live action director and so on for the past few months. Can't blame the guy for being a bit fed up with those sorts of questions. I think he handled it with good humour though.

Don’t care about the haters. I adore this movie. Great piece of art, M. Stanton!
@SirMykus12 жыл бұрын
It appears to be different everywhere I look, ha. IMDb states that it had a $5M budget, whereas Wikipedia states that it had a $9M budget. But since the interview you read came from Nolan himself I would assume that $3M is correct :-)

You could make 250 versions of "The Raid" for the amount that John Carter cost, just saying.

Saw the review. If Kermode had all these problems, why didn't he bring them up then, instead of spewing such bile (Mayo was asleep, apparently).

Andrew Stanton, if disclosing that you've made a Sci fi picture or adding the title "of Mars" puts people off going to the movie, explain the success of Star Wars… what put people of going to the movie was how quickly it became apparent that it sucked.

Hang on, this interview is a lot of blowing up Stanton's ass for WALL-E and Toy Story, and then in the review Kermode accuses the director of arrogance. What's going on?

@39thejust1 Kermode has read the books, and his review is based on how boring the movie was. Then he went on about Stanton's bullshit reasons for the title changes and artistic integrity.
