Kerosene space heater! How I stay warm during times of extreme cold / emergencies!

As the polar vortex / extreme cold has arrived, I’ll be talking about my kerosene heater that I use to supplement my home’s central heat system during times of extreme cold (as well as during emergency power outages if they occur).
(As a disclaimer, if you decide to use one of these heaters, please be sure to read the owners manual and follow all instructions included with this unit before operating it. The opinions expressed in this video are my own beliefs and should be taken as such).

Hit the teens here in western WA last week and broke some records. Heat for house is all electric and could not keep up with the cold. I will have to look into this has a backup. The maintenance tips are much appreciated (take care of your equipment and they will take care of you). Many thanks for putting this together.

You’re welcome. Glad it helped! As always, do read the owners manual and follow all procedures. Mine came w a detailed manual as well as a quick start guide that just outlined basic procedures. Best to read everything and get a handle on what you’re doing before ya try to use something like this.

i had a kerosine heater for heating my living space. it was the more boxy kind of one with the ceramic thing. a full tank could last as little as 3.5 - 4 hours, or if you turned it all the way down you could get it to last just about 8 hours. i stopped using it inside because one night i woke up with a terrible headache. after i got myself up i realized what was going on and opened a few windows, wrapped up in a blanket and went outside. the thing used up all the oxygen in the house, or at least enough that i could have drifted off to never wake up again land. you gotta vent a little and be super careful.

Yeah, I’ve heard that before about them. What I do is keep the heater in the largest room of my house the very front living areas, and frequently open the front door for a few seconds every hour to let some fresh air in. I keep a carbon monoxide monitor near it just in case, and it’s never gone off, always reads at 0. I also don’t run it at night when I’m asleep, just during the day / until I go to bed.

@@PaulC001 I always advise to read the owners manual for operation, it does have a caution section; some heaters recommend you not operate indoors, others say operate indoors but not at night / leave them unattended.

I never run mine at night, or especially if I were asleep. Make sure you use K1 CLEAN fuel. Read the manual.

i had one of those way back in.... 1986? around then. it puts out good heat. it didnt have the wire around it. i remember how replacing the wick sock had to be just right or it burned half side high not good.. but it did heat great. i put a pan of water on top. now i use mr buddy to offset the heatpump and space heater. stay warm 😊🏡👍

Is kerosene readily available in DFW? I'm in east Texas and nobody carries it except box stores and it's wayyyy expensive there. Certain KZbinrs are touting using ultra low sulfur diesel as a substitute but you must use a cotton wick.

Yes, it is available; but like ya said, pretty much box stores (Home Depot, Lowe’s, ace hardware etc) and yeah it’s not terribly cheap right now either. I haven’t been able to find a station to fill up my empty containers like we do for gasoline for vehicles. I haven’t heard that about low sulfur diesel but personally I wouldn’t recommend that; the heater manual says to only use K1 kerosene. I did find spare wicks at the Home Depot so picked one up just in case.

i use the same thing. I use it in the kitchen. I am thinking of a Chinese diesel heater. here in KY diesel is $2.00 a gallon cheaper. Kerosene is costing me $75.00 a week.

Yeah kerosene isn’t the cheapest right now. $30 for 2.5 gal container at HD, and no fill up stations around me, rural areas maybe. But ya can’t beat it for emergency / supplementary heat imo.
