I love your longer videos Kerry, it gives one a better idea of how to do things. I’m watching this again as I wan5 to do a pair of otters for my daughter and partner, challenging I know and different colours, but your tip #bout sticking to mid tones to start with is really helpful as is watching how you apply the pan pastels. I think I’m crazy trying to do this with no tuition but one has to learn somehow lol
@kerrynewell-wildlifeartist5 жыл бұрын
Hi there Margaret, how are the otters coming along? A lovely subject, especially if the fur on them is wet. Teaching yourself as you go along, in my opinion, is one of the best ways to learn. You can read books and watch videos, but once you start to experiment with your materials that's when you really will start to grow as an artist. Have fun xXx
@margaretbrownhill11935 жыл бұрын
Yes thats what I think, I’ve ordered some sheets of pastelmat from jacksons a pack of 5 of each of the brown and sienna. I’ve be3n thinking a lot about what colour that should be then about the underpainting colours for the pan pastels, I did a seascape for one of my daughters in pan pastels to get used to using them, I’m doing a simple l@ndscape for @nother daughter today for the same reason, it’s like dry painting I like it. I bought a lovely photo of the otters from wildlife photos for artists a site that I really like. The quality of the photos are better than say on pixabay also an indication of the colours in the subject is given which for a beginner like me is helpful. First though I’ve got to try snd paint a small tortioshell butterfly in watercolour for my eldest daughters birthday. I may even think about doing Thst in pastel I’m very tempted to do so, I think I could be more successful, then I’m doing a peregrine falcon at my sons request for his birthday which like my eldest daughter is st 5he end of November, so the otters may be after that. Either way I’m beginning my wildlife art journey in pastels now. I’m hoping Thst my drawing skills will Aid me as well not to mention my observational skills which I’m developing . The thing to figure out is how to transfer my line drawing to the pastelmat I think I may use the white tracedown

@@kerrynewell-wildlifeartist I will you too!!.. I have a question though, do you frame these pastel pics? and if so do you ever use a mount with Plexiglas instead of actual glass? I've read mixed things about static and whether or not to use fixatives and some say with the mount it's fine to use plexi just remove the charge first by wiping with a damp cloth. Always used acrylic for my graphite drawings as so much lighter and easier to post! any advice appreciated x
@kerrynewell-wildlifeartist2 жыл бұрын
@@GroguTube Hi there Gemma, yes I always frame my pastel paintings, as they're often exhibited and therefore 'up for sale' so to speak. I never use plexiglass and therefore never recommend it due to it's static attributes. When working pastel on Clairefontaine Pastelmat I've never felt the need for fixative (even when shipping paintings to clients abroad). I only frame with glass but package my paintings extremely well. Yes they are slightly heavier but the difference is calculated into the cost of the final piece, if a client wants to purchase one of my paintings then they are made aware of the shipping costs too etc. xXx

Thankyou for suggesting Thst Kerry, I don’t have Thst sort of app on my iPad, I don’t have a pc, it’s a steep learning curve at seventy trying to be technologically aware lol, this is partly why I like getting my photos from the wildlife photos for artists site, it gives on3 an idea and I study the photos a lot to see how the colours work. This is why I love how you do things you’ve made me so much more aware and observant. For example in the photo I have of the falcon if you look closely you can actually see the clouds and the sky reflected in his eyes along with the eye colour. I love your rambles because I learn so much from you I know you think it’s waffling but it’s actually very illuminating 😊

Good morning Margaret I hope you are well. So you decided to use a different medium for your butterfly, there's nothing wrong in that at all. In fact if you have come to the point in your artistic journey where you are deciding which mediums are preferable for certain projects then you have already learnt a lot 😊 I hope your otters will prove to be a successful and satisfying pastel project for you xXx Meanwhile this end I am working towards my KZbin channel, I know I have an unfinished pastel tutorial to complete, but in the meantime over the weekend I've also been working on a basic sketching tutorial that will help beginners and the more advanced alike. Thankyou Kerry, yes I’m really good st graphite drawing usually landscapes, with the otters I’m going to practice first on dome pastelmat to build up the layers to get or try to get the impression of fullness for the fur. I have had about thirty five of the Caran d’Ache pastel pencils which I absolutely love more do than my Faber castell ones and have just treated myself to the remainder, they will hopefully arrive this week, I know Thst my soft pastels which are a combination of unison and sennelier will fill the tooth up too quickly on pastelmat fir the underpainting for the otters so may us3 my Daler rowney hard pastels for that whilst using the unison for the background as a bokeh effect. I know Thst I can draw the animals but will use your tutorials and adapt them for the fur. My daughter said to take my time there is no rush lol, but I will enjoy the process. It would be lovely to do more animal portraits, there is a barn owl I want to do for my sons partner, but it’s all a learning curve now lol

Ive sent my Mum your youtube channel as she has just started doing art classes and i think you will be easier for her to follow since you explain everything so well. Just watching this Kerry, how pan pastels would one need, as they are quite expensive I don’t want to get ones that are unnecessary @nd I wouldn’t use if that makes sense. At present I’m saving for the Caran d’Ache pastel pencils I have about a dozen that I bought opens stock and they are amazing like all their ranges, I have to admit I’m a c d fan

Hi there Margaret. Yes the pans are expensive initially but they seem to last forever, well a very long time compared to pastel sticks. The amount of colours required to start off with really depends on the subjects you wish to create. I purchased 30 individual pans, but you could start with as little as five as they're completely mixable, then add to your collection as needs be. Depending on how much you want to spend you could go for one of the '20 sets'. Whatever you decide I'm pretty sure you wont regret your purchase :-) Best wishes, Kerry xXx
