Developing Your Voice | John Legend on Street You Grew Up On

This week on Street You Grew Up On, Kerry Washington circles back to the midwest with EGOT winner, John Legend to visit his hometown of Springfield, Ohio. John was raised in the church, playing piano and singing in the choir. Coming from a strict Pentecostal background, he and his three siblings weren’t exposed to pop and secular music. After growing up, John began to explore different music mediums to help find his voice in music in combination with his historical soul sound. He has pulled inspiration from artists like Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, and Aretha Franklin to develop the voice he has today. Stick around and you may just get a sneak peek of some of John’s new music from his self-titled album, LEGEND, releasing September 9th.

Here in JA, Growing up I didn't get to see any musicals, but we had a tv musical show called *Ring Ding*. Tv show called *Lime Tree Lane*. Song, *Wild Gilbert, by lovindeer*. Movie, *Cool Runnings*. These are just the Jamaican ones. There are many foreign shows, movies and songs from back then that are very dear to me.

Man what a trip growing up in strick Pentecostal homes I use to think my mom was crazy but it nice hearing I wasn't alone but because of how I grow up I became a great reader and writers till this day that how I gain my knowledge of things outside the church as a child . love you Kerry and John

Very interesting on what we know about depression and different forms of mental illness now as opposed to the 80s John is not alone in his experience in dealing with an absentee parent,he’s also in my opinion a musical genius and he’s from OHIO!
