On this episode of Street You Grew Up On, Kerry Washington travels with the brilliant and “peppy” fashion luminary Tan France to St. Ludlow Ave in Doncaster, England. Although this street brings up memories of racism and abuse, his actual home with his parents, his siblings, and his extended family was filled with joy, love, food, lots of MTV, and the feeling of safety. We’re really able to see where the journey began to become one of Queer Eye’s most beloved cast members, a trendsetting designer, and a best selling author!
About Street You Grew Up On: Simpson Street is where our journey begins. It’s the street that Kerry Washington’s mom grew up on in The Bronx, NY. Through this social series, Kerry Washington interviews artists, influencers and industry experts to uncover their origin stories, amplify our common humanity and affirm the value of every individuals' journey, beginning with the “street you grew up on...”

It’s amazing that Tan is still such a positive, loving man despite that traumatic experience he had at age 5. I really appreciate his frequent references to the similarities that brown people have in common. I find that some people of color try to disassociate themselves with other ethnicities, but in reality a lot of us experience the same hate and discrimination. Also, him talking about his childhood referencing the food, music/MTV, fashion, family/friends showing up unannounced, etc….it really brought me back to my childhood and my family. Thanks for sharing Tan and thanks for facilitating this conversation Kerry👏🏽👍🏽🥰

Kerry, I don't even know if I can articulate how your show is impactful and necessary. I do not know where the inspiration came but I so glad it did. The episode have been maturational in a sense, getting better each one. Thank you Tan for sharing and being the creative you are, letting nothing stop you. Community is truly what this generation is missing. Kerry I cannot wait to share this with my friends and family.

When Tan says, "But", that shows your background. My family thought I was strange because if anyone used a derogatory word about a person from Pakistan; that word in my presence even in my car, as a young woman, I would stop the car. And, have a discussion about it - I gave an ultimatum about how they would choose to continue their journey, and it would not be in my car. I suppose this is where my own legal profession direction in an adversarial role came from.

Hello Kerry, I grew up not too far from Simpson Street; I lived on Fox Street as well as on Wilkins Avenue (or as it's now known "Louise Nine Blvd" off of Freeman Street). I lived very near to Crotona Park. What fun memories I have of growing up in that vicinity as a child (I had loads of friends). I no longer live in the Bronx, but I am forever a Bronx girl in my heart. I have just subscribed to your channel and I will let my fellow Bronxites know about your show here on KZbin. Good luck!

One of my childhood memories, I do remember was the racism against people of colour, especially the Indian and Pakistani community. But, I remembered my father encouraging me to stay with Indian and Pakistani girls as friends.

Bringing back childhood memories of living in England. In our neighbourhood we mixed with all children and Indian and Pakistani children were part of our social circle. I also worked in "Donnie" for many years.
