Even a poor Wifi connection can't stop the dad jokes! On this VERY special episode of Street You Grew Up On, Kerry Washington takes it all the way back to her roots and visits the stomping grounds of her very own father, Earl Washington. We learn about his life as a young, decorated track star living in the Fort Greene projects in Brooklyn, New York. Monument Walk was a tough street, but it provided a sense of community. Despite adversity, Mr. Washington was raised in a house filled with love, respect, and strict rules that would one day save his life.
About Street You Grew Up On: Simpson Street is where our journey begins. It’s the street that Kerry Washington’s mom grew up on in The Bronx, NY. Through this social series, Kerry Washington interviews artists, influencers and industry experts to uncover their origin stories, amplify our common humanity and affirm the value of every individuals' journey, beginning with the “street you grew up on...”

@KerryWashington - let your dad know he is not the only one to achieve quick feet and running skills, learning to run away from a parent whooping in the house. Not only would you learn running skills, but dodging skills as well! 🤣✊🏿

I remember looking up to Jet and Frank Winston running. I grew up in 8 Monument Walk 3E, which is the same building as 24. What a great video. I still talk to Frank everyday who Jet competed against and ran with against the other side of the projects❤️🙏🏿!

Hi Kerry, I came across your series purely by chance one day and love the whole idea, your show and the guests and now an avid watcher. I have just seen the show with your mother which I really enjoyed and the interview with you dad. It was interesting to hear about your mums life growing up, especially with her Jamaican back ground. Which makes it even more special for me. Your mother’s great grand father is my 2nd grand father’s brother, David Solomon Elliott.it makes me feel so proud to say I have who is th wonderful actress and person. All the best. Pat from London.

I am glad, as a society, that many of us are moving away from spanking and physical punishments to our children. Spankings were not very hard for children of his era; they were a normal part of life. As a wealthy woman Keri, I am sure your children will find things like sharing a bathroom or flying economy class "hard". It's all about perspectives and while I disagree with spankings personally, I understand it was rooted in survival tactics. For them, physical discipline was effective for many reasons. The first is that it is time effective, when you've worked caring for other people's children or in a factory plus taken three trains and a bus to get home you don't have the leisure to gentle parent. Spanking was quick and fast and seemingly effective. The second, society induced stress. No Black man wanted to raise his family in the projects. Many Black men of that era became very bitter because of society's limitations on their lives. Lastly, corporal punishment has been passed down since slavery. Many Black people feel that if they whipped/spanked/beat their children first, it would prevent them from receiving harsher consequences from society. Society caused these issues, and unfortunately, they were very normal to Black Americans during those times. Your Grandfather was surviving being a descendant of slavery. It was passed down from Massa, you had to beat your kids into submission because you rather be the one to beat them before any white man did. I just wish this was acknowledged in more detail.
