You nailed it Kim! I've been freelance since 200...8? The exact shape of that has changed many times. Sometimes steady long-term work, sometimes piecemeal. But the last few years have been the toughest. Doing work I believe in, but that didn't pay enough -- though it was incredibly time and energy consuming. So then putting more irons in the fire. And then those irons *almost* turning into gigs but not (over and over). So then more irons, but then if they land can I do them all?, but if they don't land I need to keep pitching... /and so on/. Then when work turns up, you're also tired from all the effort to get work. All that to say I feel you. You are very talented and you are not alone. May 2025 be a great year for you, in every way 💚

Hi Kim, I just wanna say I really appreciate you being open with your struggles as a freelancer. I started freelancing about a year ago and managed to find only one client so far. I know that how financially well off you are is really no indicator of success, but it still feels like a failure. I love doing this, but there's always that nagging feeling of dread in the background. I love your illustrations, especially the swan leadership one. Love seeing your sketches as well! eesh...that cat! with the snake piece😍 Genius! The irony is that you were talking about Imposter Syndrome. That made me feel like an imposter. It's no mean feat that you're able to be a fulltime pro artist today. I cannot relate to burnout, but I can relate to pro comic artists who do it for the love of it with no to little pay or outcome. And whenever I have any doubt to my purpose and questioning whether it is worth it, I call upon the ghost of Rembrandt. May the new year bring you even more prosperity.
