Kia Ora, I am glad I could help with that! It's really easy once one knows how to do it.. though my way is only one of the many ways of finishing the bottom.. if you start asking around or go to weaving wananga you'll find there are at least 2-3 more out there

tessa roff like most weavers these days I use commercial dyes - Teri mostly as RIT is no longer taking on the flax - Teri Dyes is in the South Island - I might make another tutorial on dyeing and boiling if I get the time soon.

This is so great. How can I learn more from you. I love your teaching because it is simple and informative but I am hoping to actually do it and be able to ask questions. Thank you for the nice tutorial, you are the best.

Thank you Meta! I don't usually teach - only these few videos for weavers who need a bit of extra help or if I happen to be at a wananga and someone ask a question right there and then I am of course happy to help. If you after a tutor who will help you along the way I would suggest the brilliant online teachings of Veranora Hetet from the Hetet school of weaving (google it) - she has step by step tutorials of all sorts of things and has students from all over the world.

Kia Ora Meta, I do not run classes but there are others who do online teaching (though I am a firm believer that it should be a more face to face thing ... ) - try Te Wananga O Aotearoa or the Maori Womans Welfare League for classes, some community groups also have classes and then there are wananga all around the country - lastly there is also the hetet school of weaving who do (paid) online classes where you are get to interact with the tutor.

We have Phormium tenax in the uk but how do you prepare it and dye it?
@Flaxworx
@Flaxworx 5 жыл бұрын
Kia Ora Deb, if you go onto the video list on this (my) channel you find a couple of videos on the preparation and also the dyeing (which is the same as the boiling) process. Though remember the Phormium that you do have in the UK is usually not the best weaving variety - I tried a few and they are ok but not the absolute best that we use here in our plantations. The ones you have mostly are variegated ones that are bred for ornamental purposes originally - though some can be rather nice and might even have decent muka.

Kia Ora Miriam, well the reason I don't show that and a few other bits and pieces are there are so many different ways of starting this and every person can and will find their own unique way of doing things - In my full time class we where actually not shown either, same with handles - we where told - work it out and make it yours in the process - and I do believe it made me the weaver I am and I think it would be great if others feel the same :-) I even change it every so often so one day it is one way the next another...
