A white Thoroughbred is a rare and stunning sight. Arctic Bright View is such a horse, and he impressed the filmmakers at Disney, too. This Kentucky stallion was among the four horses used to portray Silver in the 2013 movie The Lone Ranger. At home now on Megson Farms in Calvert City, he is among over a dozen white Thoroughbreds owned by Paul Megson-most likely the largest herd of registered white Thoroughbreds in the world.
Just a few Thoroughbred lines possess the genetic mutation responsible for the gleaming white coat. Only 149 white Thoroughbreds have been officially registered since 1963, and prior to that, scientists and horsemen alike believed they were a genetic impossibility.
Most people who think they've seen a white Thoroughbred have actually seen a gray-who eventually gray out to solid white. The first white Thoroughbred registered with the Jockey Club came from Patchen-Wilkes Farm in Fayette County in the 1960s. Another line is through Airdrie Apache, a Thoroughbred stallion originally from former Governor Brereton Jones' Airdrie Stud farm.
Away from the movie set, Arctic Bright View still enjoys the limelight, appearing at the Equine Affaire in Columbus, Ohio, and other horse shows.

Wow. I think it's so interesting, that they have actually been able to continue the breeding of the white Thoroughbreds. It seems like good timing since alot of equine vets and universities are really beginning to get results from all these horses patterns

I grew up watching the Lone Rangers' "Silver".... Hopalong Cassidys' "Topper". Handsome animals! But I also loved Trigger, Buttermilk, Champion, Diablo, Flicka, Scout and Fury. I'm probably forgetting a few.

He said that UC Davis can't find the Dominant White gene in his herd. Test them for the Sabino paint gene. All of those mares look Maximum Expression Sabino. The stud they showed as the foundation sire for the line was definitely a Sabino. Dominant White and M.E. Sabino can look very much alike. Different genotypes similar phenotype. Arabians carry the same paint gene. The best example is the stallion R Khasper and his get.

I see absolutely no positive side in breeding based on coat colour. I mean it's pretty and all but I think it's way more important to breed on health, on good legs and hooves, on good senses, a strong heart, ...

I wonder if Megson or any other white thoroughbred breeder has considered bringing any relatives of Yukichan over to the US from Japan. Yukichan won a stakes race and is a granddaughter of Sunday Silence.

You'd be surprised how many Lab owners wouldn't be able to pick out their own dog from a line-up of 10 dogs of the same color, sex and body type. Keep in mind with this movie, the horses they used all were selected to make the audience think it was only one horse being used. So they all looked very similar. Which is what Disney wanted.

Incredible looking horses, however, breeding for soundness and performance should take precedence over breeding for color. Makes me wonder how/if the pedigrees of this herd are related, or how many horses are bred back to continue the gene. The 'trainer' with lead ropes wrapped around his right hand made me cringe - especially walking a stallion. So incredibly dangerous 😨
