Whenever Kevin Burke plays, the look on his face reminds me of a jeweler cutting a diamond. There's absolutely no emotion - just total focus on his craft.

Was just casually listening to this, when I heard a tapping noise, it was my foot, keeping pretty good time but totally involuntary. Check out the studio recording of Fionnghuala on the Bothy Band's debut album ''Old Hag You Have Killed Me'', it's like nothing you've ever heard before!

Oh god...this performance took place, I believe, in 1982 in the TV studios of WOUB in Athens, Ohio. I know this because when the camera pans the audience in the beginning, there's myself sitting with a bartender I worked with at a place called Mr. Bojangles (upstairs from O'Hooley's...I wonder whatever happened to Bert?). Anyhow...these two guys, Kevin & Micheal...phew...their LP "Promenade" had already permanently altered my DNA and rearranged the wiring of my brain, and seeing them from a few feet away was like an out-of-the-body experience. It really messed me up for a long time. I spoke briefly with Micheal O'Domnaill afterwards to ask what tuning he used, and he looked at me like I'd asked what was his favorite toothpaste...

Michael O really is the benchmark. I was just looking around for great videos to recommend to a friend who wants to hear what it is really about. John Blake, yes, John Doyle, yes, Daithi, Arty--all awesome. But Michael is so much the essence in my mind. Restrained, supporting the music perfectly, never showboating. I never saw him play. So thanks for this chance. RIP.

I love it when Kev says “yewh” and Micheál repeats it at the beginning. All those little things. 🙂 Or was it “yewooh”? Wondering what does that mean. 🤷🏻 His sister Tríona Ní Dhomhnaill told me his gorgeous giotár here was sadly stolen 😐 Must have plenty just as fine in Heaven. RIP, Máistéir Micheál ❤️
