Michael's guitar playing is amazing. Although it sounds plain and straightforward he's actually doing loads, but it's so bang tight that he leaves it uncluttered with loads of room for the fiddle. Brilliant

Well said. Great musician, that one

I’ve learned that with accompanying a melody , you strum on each count, like he does. But Oah yes Michael strums soo nice and tight .. Kevin is my favorite fiddler .
@Melvorgazh2 жыл бұрын
Heyo John! Doing alright? What does ‘uncluttered’ here mean to you? I wish to understand. I so much wish I had a lesson or 2 or 35+ by late Máistéir a Michíl. Perhaps I could have a lesson from one of his students. 🤷🏻 How many giotár students did he have? I only know Soaig Siberil from Brittany (BZH). Micheál is me uimhir a hAon-1 giotár backer ❤️ and also favourite amhránaí.

Yep. for me, Altan and Devish were the last bands that got me going. There's great bands out there but they're either playing in a style that was done to perfection in between the 70s and the 90s, or using increasingly complicated arrangments in a search for a new sound
@FredJ513 жыл бұрын
@@johndooley1908 The Bothy Band & Planxty had extraordinary influence on most Trad musicians and singers. I doubt very much that any similar group has had as much influence on the individual player and singer since. You're right, of course; it's all studio work these days, voices and even instruments manipulated to a sort of insane perfection. Guitar styles and fiddle styles were copied - and they were copy-able - to the benefit of ordinary players. I don't think we'll get back to that simple, true playing again.

Watching and listening to Kevin Burke is like having a vicarious out-of-body experience. There is unthinkably stunning music happening, but somehow it's a coincidence that it's happening in his hands. Truly marvellous.
@PawsAndKeys2 жыл бұрын
How little he moves his head, how consistently perpendicular his bow is, how gently he flicks the strings without extra effort or display. He seems patiently observing his body and the bow, it's flowing out freely.

@SirSelby9 жыл бұрын
Niavlys Brunière Yes, there are several fretted instruments in the same family, such as relatives of the viola de gamba, etc... though I'm not sure if you'd call them a "violin" or not. I saw one person who made a 7 string fretted electric violin, but that is certainly an exception. Regardless, the comment was made due to the OP implying that fretless fiddles were a rarity, rather than the norm.
