Tbh Jomboy’s analytics are biased because pitchers have a higher chance of facing the lineup a third time through if they already do good against the second time. So what Jomboy should’ve done is looked at second time through stats in games pitchers pitched to batters a third time vs third time through stats. That being said, I still think it was a bad move.

Managers are always over managing during the World Series. Especially these days. I remember when Jack Morris went 10 innings and 122 pitches to win Game 7 vs Braves in 1991. @@23ofSeptember the jays coaching staff did this constantly all season. The starter is killing it for like 4-5 innings with low pitch count still feeling great. They show the tiniest signs of struggle and they get pulled for a third rate reliever. Have some faith in your pitching staff, let them finish the inning. Gausman consistently got himself out of jams all season and this wasn’t even a jam and he still got pulled. @Tyrantofthewind
@Tyrantofthewind 3 жыл бұрын
He doesn't have a better explanation. That is the problem, his decision is not defensible from any position. If he was concerned about being blamed for leaving Snell in too long (which no one would have done anyway at that pitch count) he should have just visited the mound and asked Snell if he wanted the ball and if he was still feeling it. Then it is entirely on Snell and Cash can just point to him if he failed. Bottom line is not only did he make a horrendous decision, he didn't even give Snell an opportunity to argue for staying in despite how amazing he was pitching. It was a game losing managerial decision with nothing to back it. If Cash had come out and said he made a poor decision I think people would be more forgiving, but he flat out went to a defense that just isn't there.

Checked out the SB Nation Rays board for their thoughts. My sense was that while not what most fans would have wanted, the decision to take out Snell was still defensible: people forget that Snell was also dealing in Game 2... until he gave up a hit and a 2-run HR at around the same pitch count when he got pulled in Game 5 (albeit he did have 4 walks to go with 88 pitches in G2 v. 73 pitches and 0 walks). Not saying pulling Snell was a GOOD call, but it's not as bad as people make it out to be. What's indefensible is bringing in Anderson, who was pretty much gassed and not the lights-out reliever he was during the regular season. Rays fans would have rather seen Ryan Thompson, a fresher (and more effective) righty who relies on his sinker and slider.

So what Jomboy should’ve done is looked at second time through stats in games pitchers pitched to batters a third time vs third time through stats. That being said, I still think it was a bad move.

Sometimes if they know they're changing pitchers no matter what, they'll signal the change via raising the appropriate arm.
