Bill Russell passed away today and when I heard the news, I came straight to this conversation. 10 years ago, I came across their conversation and in 2 minutes, the concept of passion, drive, integrity, humility all clicked for me. Bill and KG saved my life.

WOW. That's wonderful to hear from a fan of one of Boston's biggest arch-rivals. I am a 61-year-old diehard Celtics fan, and Bill is my choice as not only my favorite player in any sport but also the greatest player in any sport. It is truly heart-warming to hear that wonderful "horse laugh" of his again. I hope to meet the guy at some point in my life, but we are both old now.

Such a huge shame that Garnett got hurt in '08-'09. I'm a Magic fan and we nearly didn't win that series without him playing, they would've straight up wrecked us if he did play. I feel as if we've been robbed of a potential 3 peat from that Celtics squad by injuries.

Here from 2021...a few things 1. KG and Bill played the exact same role for the Celtics, tough defense and leadership. 2. KG should have gotten 2 at least with this team, and likely 4 or 5 finals appearances. His injury sealed that because he was never the same. Intensity was there, but he lost a lot of quickness. Like he said in 2010 against LA, they had that series, but the Celtics were exhausted in game 7. And Miami was just too young and hungry. 3. The leadership part, taking people with you...that's real. KG has a rep and can be very old school, but we've seen him take guys and help, and then mold them, help refine their skills. He could be a great assistant coach.

And look what happened, that same year the Celtics went on to win an NBA Championship, the Celtics again in 2010 made an appearence to the NBA Finals only to loose by 4 points in LA, and KG is 35-36 having one of his best years in the NBA in 2012. This man is a champion, has the heart of the champion, and this man is my HERO. Celtics for life man

This is coming from a big Lakers fan - When Russel said you've got to put your arms around your team mates and walk there with them, not drag them, that spoke to me. Not just applicable to basketball. That's something that everyone can listen to, learn from and appreciate, the wisdom of a guy that's been there and done that. Definitely worthy of having the Finals MVP named after him.

@BostonCelticsForLife I felt the exact same way. I cried that night. It was so sad to see Rasheed, Kevin, Paul, and everyone else play their hearts out and play together as a team yet come out the losers. One thing I will always know and remember, is that the Celtics have something that the Lakers still don't have. Teamwork and togetherness.

I'm 68 years old and I saw them all. I rate the 3 best basketball players as follows: 1. Michael Jordon, 2.Bill Russell, 3.Wilt Chamberlain. There were a whole lot of players close behind, but these 3 were the best in my opinion. Most underrated and smoothest basketball player I ever saw though, was Walt "Clyde the Glide" Frazier. And the man with the eyes in the back of his head, the amazing Bob Cousy.

Also, I DESPISE the celtics because they have beaten the cavs, yet I love every single player on that team! because each of them is aw CHAMPION Holla ROb

@gmbdeals1 Underachiever? He was good for 21 pts, 12 reb, 2 stl, 2 blk, 50%, for at least 7-8 years in a row before leaving Minnesota. The man was there by HIMSELF. As soon as he went to Boston, and had other talented players on his team-championship. Injury prevented a 2nd or third, and remember they lost in GAME 7 in 2010, so it almost came true. Bill Russell has always loved Garnett. I'm guessing a guy who has 11 rings as a player and 1 as a coach knows great players when he sees them.
