I love how hysterical his Phantom is. The way he says “delight” too. That “go now” scream is even more hair-rising than Ramin’s 25th one. And I thought that’s the most hair-rising scream of that part. His gestures at “your lover makes a passionate plea” and “start a new life with me” too. He’s literally Panaro’s Phantom but more hysterical. Such talent. May he rest in peace.

It is great to see more footage of Kevin Gray. He is a very rare case of inheriting some of Lon Chaney's magic and vision, He uses his slender appearance so well on the stage to create a powerful effect. He knows how to wear the make-up once it is on him, some phantoms let the make-up wear them, and its just there on them, but Gray can manipulate it, and it is bone-chilling. sometimes a flash in his eyes that works with the prosthesis and makes him seem like a cadaver. But those yells are the pains of the damned still trying to live. What a raw and disturbing performance by an unforgettable artist, I cannot believe he is no longer with us. :( Now he is a real of music. But his work is here on earth, we must keep sharing it.

What a beautiful, moving performance by Kevin here. Such a talent. I had the pleasure of seeing him as The Engineer in Miss Saigon many years ago, but I would have loved to have seen him in this role.

This tour and Kevin Gray were my introduction to musical theater. Since then I have seen Phantom over three hundred time (because I worked in a theater) and Kevin was the most amazing phantom by far. I was so awestruck by his performance I wrote him a letter and to my great surprise and delight he responded to me sending me a signed photo. He and I corresponded a few times that year. Not only was he an amazing actor but kind, taking the time to respond in handwritten notes. I am so glad you shared this video. Amazing to see him again.

I was blessed to watch him perform in person. He was my Uncle by marriage and to witness and now watch his artistic abilities, takent and passion is beautiful. No one compares to his portrayal of the Phantom of the opera. He was and still is an inspiration ✨️

I cried the first time I saw the Phantom(unfortunately my first was the movie 2004). Since then I have not been able to cry although the emotions are certainly there. This actually brought back the tears! His performance was so amazing. There are no words to accurately describe it. My favorite part is when he yells "I love you, Christine" at the end. That's where the tears started.

I've watched this video like a hundred times I love it so much. I couldn't thank you enough for making it, because I actually take vocal lessons from Kevin's wife Dodie and feel a very special connection to them. This video really helps all who knew or somehow were/are connected to Kevin, because it's such a shame that he passed away at such a young age.

Originally, i felt like Kevin’s Phantom was too eccentric and wild. With time, that has become what i loved most about his portrayal

The Masonic Temple Theatre. This was the 2nd National Tour and Kevin was our 2nd Phantom (after Mark Jacoby)

It's a very narrow path to walk when playing Phantom in this scene. The temptation is to do what he does here and go full out madness. Unfortunately if you do that too much you leave Christine nothing to work with. I can't believe that this Christine feels any pity for this Phantom. He has given her no reason to empathise with him - he's too unlikeable. It's a pity because this guy is actually very good. I just wish that he'd calmed it down a bit.

ANDREW HOLTON Did you see him live? Truly the best Phantom I’ve ever seen. It worked I can assure you.

More than one member of my family said the same thing (wished Kevin had calmed it down a bit) right after the curtain fell on the Phantom of the Opera - circa 1989. We'd just seen Kevin Gray and Teri Bibb in Phantom at the Kennedy Center Opera House (Washington, DC) 1989, and agreed that his performance was more intense --to say the least?!-- than Michael Crawford's (Michael's Phantom was all we knew/we, by then owned a CD player, and the original cast Phantom CDs). But that massive Kennedy Center Opera House stage, seemed absorb Kevin's Phantom's madness well. Though I've since seen more subdued Phantoms on stage, "my First Phantom"/Kevin Gray, will always stand out in my heart and memory. Sad that he's gone.
