The last game at the old Wembley Stadium saw England succumb to a 1-0 defeat to Germany in a World Cup qualifier. Kevin Keegan immediately resigned from his position as England manager as the match ended.

Top guy and brilliant manager for my club Man City. He was the man that first turned around the club's fortunes, that gets forgotten, even by City fans. There's a rose tinted view of Joe Royle's reign, but in truth Royle was rubbish. When Keegan came he he won the Championship at a canter, signed brilliant players like Bernarbia and Berkovic, then finished in the top half with some memorable performances and nice football. Thank you Kevin, you'll always be a City legend to me 🙏👌

Keegan was a bit unlucky when he was England Manager, the team was in a transitional period, the good 90s team with Tony Adams, Keown, Shearer etc were coming to the end and the next generation of Lampard, Terry and Gerrard were just at the start but he didn’t actually have a bad record when you look into it, he got good results against France and Brazil who were the two best sides in the world and it was a freakish goal that beat them in his last game, and but for Phil Neville needlessly tripping someone up in the penalty box against Romania at Euro 2000 they would have been in the quarter finals and it could have been different, losing Alan Shearer when he retired after the Euro’s was a blow, but Keegan painted a different picture about his time as England Manager in his recent book compared to what he said here, he felt the FA didn’t give him the support he wanted in terms of appointments he wanted to make and changes he wanted to make to scouting etc and that sections of the press wanted him out from the start. He didn’t enjoy the long gaps between matches, preferring the day to day interaction with players and decided it wasn’t for him and left but I still think he was doing ok and with younger players he’d given debuts to ie Gerrard etc who were getting better I think he would have done as well as Eriksson at the 2002 World Cup if not better because Keegan wouldn’t have chopped and changed the team as much.

Erickson actually did pretty well with England in 2002 (and not bad at Euro 2004). 2006 world cup was a little disappointing, they went out on pens to Portugal both times, Portugal got to the final in 2004 and lost to France in 2006 semi final. In 2002 Brazil were by far the best team, England only lost 2-1, better than Germany losing 2-0 in the final ( plus the great 5-1 win in Munich). I’m a big fan of Keegan but it was a similar situation to Graham Taylor imo - he wasn’t unlucky, he just didn’t have the tactical nous needed for international football, great motivator that he was. Not many English managers did, apart from Venables. KK also had Euro 2000, and although they had a difficult group, they just weren’t quite good enough, they needed to beat Romania, and they threw away an early 2-0 lead against an excellent Portugal.

The great irony is that if he had stayed he might well have walked right into the golden generation that Sven managed. He should have put Gerard on the left instead of scholes . I'm a Man Utd fan and I obviously prefer scholes but out of him lamps and Gerard , Gerard was the one who could have done the best out of position . Putting scholes on the left didn't work . Individually great squad but never gelled as a team . Beckham stepped up but the rest didn't show their best for England a bit of the blame goes to the players . They played so much better for their clubs . Rivalry is not an excuse either look at Spain Barca and real players won lots together .

Craig Weir: A former youth footballer who says he was sexually abused by a Rangers coach has been told by the club he should pursue his complaint with liquidators. The man claims he was abused within the Ibrox stadium by Gordon Neely who was head of youth development in the 1980s. But the alleged victim has been told by lawyers for Rangers that the duty of care is not with the current owners. They said that when the abuse took place Rangers were owned by a different company which was now in liquidation. The man, who is in his 40s, was offered help in accessing counselling services, but no apology was made in correspondence from the club's lawyers.

Keegan always admits himself that he's more suited to club management. In international management you have to be willing to accept that the development of your players is down to their clubs and not you and you can't really build the same sort of relationship with your players if you were seeing them every day in training for the club. I still would like to see Keegan have at least one more go at club management cos I genuinely believe he knows a good player when he sees one and I think with the financial backing that clubs get today he could really help the smaller clubs establish themselves

That was the most honest football interview ever.. No criticism of players, referees, the fa, time factor, his staff... Just I'm not good enough and gone.. I met Kevin at an after dinner meeting once and he's honest if not anything else.. He said he retired when he returned to England because a payer from Leeds who he ran rings around in his time at Liverpool, then not only caught him with yards to spare but made him look silly he decided he was no longer a top player and retired.. No bitterness about it.. Im a united fan and wish Roy Keane was honest like this about himself.. If he said fergie was right.. I'm in my mid thirties, bad injuries, I'm past it, there's young lads coming in and I'm taking the team forward and I agree that for the club it was the best move he'd possibly become a decent manager.. But that arrogance of I'm this and if you don't like it it's everyone but my fault and il kick off and hit someone has hampered him.. Hope keegan is doing well in life.. And nice to see this today.. I've never seen this before, it's a shame than most other managers don't have this kind of attitude and would rather just trash talk their ex-clubs after resigning or being sacked. As Keegan said, he gave it his best shot and couldn't have asked for more from the players or the FA, but he just wasn't good enough and didn't want to out stay his welcome. Jose Mourinho springs to mind as a recent bitter manager who out stays his welcome.

Forgot this, as a Man Utd supporter I've never been a fan of him but this was a classy and honest interview. All but dead in the modern games of managers saying the same old cliches.

As a Geordie, this is why we revere the man so much to this day. He was not only a genuinely great coach (certainly at club level - he never won titleware at the very top but came mighty close) but he was also a very decent man, in the human sense. Straight talking, he bled black and white as our manager but there was never any lies or deceit; he told our fans why he was selling players (such as A. Cole to Man Utd) against popular opinion by walking out and meeting the fans on the streets. You would never get that now.

Southgate should learn something from him.

Love Kev but the best thing he did in football was walk away from the England job. He was completely out of his depth and had the grace to admit it and take action.
