Bite on the fake and it's the up and under. Don't bite and you get the fade away, hook, runner, or straight jumper in your face. Double team and he'll either split the defenders and go up and under, hit the step back, or run right into the help defender and go to the line, where he's a career 80% FT shooter (crazy for a big). Maybe convert a 3 pt play. He was going to put himself in a position to get a high percentage shot, period. It was just a matter of if it went in or not. Your best bet is to deny him the basketball, because once he gets it down there it's over. But that's easier said than done with a 6'10" guy with that type of footwork and the wingspan of a pterodactyl. You can pretty much just lob it in there and he'll come away with it somehow. One of the most unstoppable presences in league history. Criminally underrated.

Kevin defined what it means to be a powerful forward! To set a tone. He has best feet work I have every seen because of 1 fact. Kevin wasn't athletic and had no vertical. He relied on skill only and he mastered his craft. "Big game" James Worthy is 1b. Different style with him because he used raw speed and athleticism that made him almost unstoppable. Hakeem olajuwon only 6-10 combo forward center his moves we effortless on the block. The called him dreamshake for a reason. As kid used to watch Kevin and the rest and practiced their moves and became a beast on the low post at neighborhood park. Thanks for your contribution and when the game was played by men.

People talk about who is the greatest power forward ever. Some say Karl Malone, Tim Duncan, etc., but as far as which player had MANY moves on the low post and was basically unstoppable, it was Kevin McHale. Duncan, Malone and other were great, but no one could match McHale's assortment of moves (and also a very good shooter) the way #32 could perform. The ONLY reason why McHale didn't average 25+ PPG is because it was Larry Bird's team. Don't get me wrong, Bird and McHale were great together (with Parish), but if McHale played for a team where HE was the main focal point, he would have EASILY averaged 25 PPG over his career. Unstoppable.

Kevin McHale is one of the most underrated players ever. The definition of finesse over athleticism and skill over power. Every night he went out there to post up against guys who where taller, bigger, stronger, more athletic or all of the above, than him, and most of the times he got the better of them. Can only imagine the punishment he must've taken each and every game. Most likely the reason why he looks so physically broken down to this day. Mad respect.

@@zhugelianges very good player for his time, super efficient but kind of limited in what he was able to do offensively. To me the knock on him is that his abilities wouldn't translate to all eras, particularly this one. Also, Malone was market corrected by Kevin Garnett, and right now we're watching Kevin Garnett being market corrected by Giannis. To me, the upper echelon of truly great players never get market corrected. Kareem, Russell, Barry, Magic, Bird, McHale, Jordan, Isiah, Dream, Shaq, Dirk, LeBron, Durant, Curry, Luka, those guys will never be repeated. I don't feel the same way about Malone.

He was also really more athletic than he gets credit for...because for a big guy.....he could run the floor well, and also get vertically high and block & slap down shots like a skinny version of Wilt Chamberlain. But his footwork and wide range of moves made him unguardable. He would split the double-team, and even easily defeat triple team coverage with his impossible endless range of arm movements, fakes, footwork, change of directions, change of angles, underneath moves, fades, multi-directional hooks, and body contortions. Once McHale got the ball in the low post, it was an automatic 2-pts, and maybe 3-pts. There was just no way to approach the task of defending him. And...he also had a solid jump shot as well. Put him on another good Team, without the hype & mystic of Larry Bird sucking all the media attention away from his efforts & originality, and Kevin McHale would have won the League MVP a couple of times.

The best ever in the post. What made McHale's up-and-under/stepthrough nearly impossible to stop was that he also had a great fadeaway over his right shoulder and an unstoppable jump hook going left. Lost art in my humble opinion. People forgot that he was one of those guys that once inside is automatic 2 points. For 12 years straight, he was a 54% to 60% FG shooter and was still 52% in his 13th and final year. Saw an 80s articles were one player was just awed by the amount of unique moves, Kevin was getting walled off by really strong guys and even elbowed on the gut and yet he would just spin and with his graceful/smooth release or fadeaway is an auto score. He was so good at faking that many Cs and PFs don't even bother trying to block him anymore, they just stand up and raise their hands hoping he'll miss. This guy has ruined the image of so many so-called great defenders, they even tell their coaches (more like beg tbh) to have other teammates become the dedicated defender as he really makes them look bad and inept, and many would be surprised that Kareem was one of them wanting to guard Parish instead. Another thing that is not mentioned nowadays are the big men that copied his style and plethora of moves and used it consistently not only became really good scorers but durable as well (as he really doesn't jump a lot and injuring his ankles). Olajuwon's dream shake is talk about a lot but anyone back then knows, he was getting schooled by McHale in the first years of their matchups, and was only in the late 80s and early 90s where The Dream started employing more shakes into his offense, as he used to be a Wilt type of scorer. Chris Webber, Patrick Ewing, and David Robinson are other good post scorers that comes to mind that incorporated some of his fakes but didn't really went all out like Hakeem.

Such a great take. I’ve been watching a lot of 1980s games (thanks, lockdown!) and I totally agree. I think he suffers from not having a traditionally athletic look about him-he’s a bit goofy looking which makes him seem clumsy, but he’s actually incredibly sly and skillful on the court. We can only imagine what would have happened if he didn’t play on that broken foot, but I respect that he went big.

@@tinezakotnik15 Hakeem was a better overall player but I specifically said LOW POST player meaning who was the best in the low post. McHale is the best low post scorer ever. McHale was listed at 6'10". But unlike anyone else who I've ever seen play, he had ridiculously really high shoulders (or a non-existent neck. take your pick). If he had a normal neck length relative to the proportions of rest of his body, he'd have been at least 7'1". That coupled with his 8' wingspan puts him at roughly the same reach of a 7'3" player with a 7'8" wingspan (Boban Marjonovic). His physique coupled with the high release on his shots easily made his jump shots more unblockable than KD's. It's a damn shame that he played on a fractured ankle (because that's what "tough" guys were expected to do) that wound up permanently diminishing his mobility. You have to admire Bird and McHale for going all-out, but it really sucks that doing so resulted in injuries that cut short their careers. They could have easily had 3 or 4 more prime years a piece if the NBA had today's sports science and doctors constantly monitoring their bodies and protecting them from themselves.
