Michael Jordan - Postup Powerhouse (Low Post to Mid Post Progressions)

Michael Jordan. GOAT.
What gets lost about Jordan is that outside of his otherworldly athleticism and unyielding need to win at EVERYTHING, he is easily one of most fundamentally sound players of all-time. He hardly ever put a foot wrong in terms of his footwork, the correct angle is always taken, he’s got a mastery of the glass on both his flip shots and his jumpers. MJ’s post game is preposterously potent. His defense divine. His passing? Unbelievably undervalued. By the time he finished his second 3peat, he had every trick in the book and written an entirely new one all his own.

I’ll be honest: I wasn’t sure I could ever get myself to do an MJ video. The task seemed too daunting. His skillset sits somewhere between sublime and supremely spectacular and trying to parse pieces of his game seemed insanely difficult. Then @zhugelianges and I got to talking and both our channels love a good player-centric post up compilation. Obviously, Jordan is just the best to ever do it, so why not him, right? Z decided he was going to do the low post stuff and so we agreed I’d do mid post stuff. I found it a little difficult trying to determine which shots to include because some start in the low post and work out to the mid post while others begin further out and work in…so I guess a conceit I used was that so long as it either began or ended in the low to mid post, I could include it. Yes, the video is a little bit messy in terms of different styles but I wanted to include as diverse a selection as possible (#12, #45, rookie to young MJ features, some clips that had to leveled all the way up from 360p, to final Bulls season Jordan). If you’re a post up purist, you’ll probably recognize that the moves might not really be post ups, but it’s MJ so just enjoy.

Most of his jumpshots in his younger days look more like floaters where hes hanging in the air off balence like that Craig Echlo shot & he was good at banking shots off the glass wit these high degree off balence jumpers where hes relying on his leaping ability changing directions in midair then shooting a fundamental textbook jumper It wasn't just the 3 ball, his overall midrange jumper wasn't there yet & he took years to refine his mechanics so the jumper can be reliable. In his younger days, hes overwelming guys in the paint wit 1 little fake or jabstep would be enough for a defender to bite on it & he can counter by just jumping over u wit an offbalence shot shot off the glass like Duncan. Even when he got the ball in the post, didn't really need fancy footwork, wit his athleticism he could just drive middle or spin baseline

He already was accustomed to most of these post moves by his sophomore year, which is what OP was referring to, not his shooting mechanics. Yes, his shooting form developed considerably in the nba but reverse pivots, dream shakes and shimmies, drop stepping (no one could drop step on a dime off a turnaround feint like MJ until Kobe emulated it in his later years), one dribble pullups, using frames in the low block...he already had a fundamental handle on these techniques in his rookie nba season. His post game footwork and IQ was unmatched as a guard.

Not stat-wise (outside of longevity stats for the most part), not achievement-wise. I like guys like LBJ, but majorities of LBJ's highlights are clearpath lane drives overpowering weaker defenders and mostly coming off a screen in the halfcourt set. Kobe was way better shooter than jordan, if kobe made that his staple it would have been easy for him. Kobe used to use it but it wasn't his "go to". Kobe used everything in Jordan's arsenal, Jordan even said Kobe is the only person he thinks can beat him one on one because he knows all his moves. One of the reasons mj was so accurate on his postup turnarounds (he's just a shade under 50%) was that his shooting wrist was VERY strong. So he could jump out of the gym to get separation with his fade, but he would still have very good control over his shot when he flicked his wrist. This actually doesn't get talked about a lot. The reason a lot of other perimeter players struggle a lot more fg-wise when they try to shoot a fadeaway is because they have to use their arms a lot more, lessening the amount of touch and control.

Why can't ppl appreciate Kobe without trying to put him on the same pedestal as MJ. They should redo the top 10 all time and label Jordan in a whole different grade all by himself. No one belongs in the room he sits in. No one can reach the pedestal he stands on past, present or future. He's in his own world and no NBA player belongs in any comparison or conversation with him. I've never in my life seen any non-center come close to being as dominate as Jordan was in the half court. A lot of the younger kids think he was "slower" because he didn't play in a high tempo offense. This video illustrates clearly why he didn't need too, and why he wouldn't want too. He saved that energy for defense.

I am a diehard MJ fan - this is the best MJ highlight video that I have ever seen - the mastery of the craft, the footwork, the head fakes, ball fakes, putting that body on the defender and backing them down, the finishing touch, using the left hand to create distance between the defender, using that glass, and all the other crazy sh*t he did while in mid air - you can see more confidence in his (back to the rim game) later in his career - earlier he would just post up and go up in the air and stay in the air 20 minutes until the defender has eliminated his own self out of the play, then shoot 🤣 - later on, he was backing the defender down using a lot of body contact and footwork to score - MJ23 G.O.A.T.

@@calebroca5134 If you are great at it, its the most efficient way to score the ball. Many times analytics guys look at percentages but since most of them never played they never factor in energy expenditure. As players age you understand that you only need to put as much energy into a play as needed to be successful on that play. When MJ caught the ball on the pinch post he became a 3 dribble or less player. Very little energy is used and playing from there he´s able to get 30 points on 30 to 60 dribbles. Also means the player only needs to be quick for 2 steps so being able to score from that part of the floor also slows the effects of father time. James Harden takes 30 dribbles in 2 or 3 possessions alone. Gret players when they get into the early to mid 30´s need to learn to play in burst. 2 minutes, 5 minutes, 8 minutes... When you can score 14 or 15 in a burst without moving it means you have a few more burst on the offensive end or can buckle down for a few possessions on the defensive end.
