Coming from a music theory background being a choral singer for years I was super comfortable with the technique stuff. I was super comfortable with the music theory stuff. I’m at the point where I have every scale memorized and I can play them quickly. I know every cord and I can switch between them quickly, but I can play exactly 0 things all the way through and I do not remember one string songs like Iron Manor smoke on the water I need to go back and relearn those because trying to play them right now I can’t do it
@bambirapinbogin6 ай бұрын
But for example, I can’t play a single song, but if you wanted me to write out the chords and the notes from a piece of quarterstaff sheet music from a song, I’ve never seen before I could do it, even if it was in the wildest signature you could possibly think of in the bass clef instead of the treble clef

Mate, it's mind-blowing! This is exactly where I am now, in my guitar journey! I started to learn how to play the guitar about 3 weeks ago and chosen you chanel as my primary guide. As for now I've learned all basic 7 chords, you've recommended and kinda mastered to practice the spider web exercise with 80 bpm. Moving further, about a week ago (more like 10 days) I started to learn how to play my first song and chose "Hurt", as it was your recommendation + I found it great for me, as that time I was struggling with C chord and this song helped me a lot of mastering it. However, at this point I'm starting to lose the motivation as no matter how hard I try - I can't switch the chords in this song, as the timing requires. In particular from C to D. And this is only 3 cords of the first part of the song. Then moving to G makes it even worse, as it takes even more time then from C to D( I'm doing your switching cord exercise with metronome everyday, but still can't switch between the chords in this song, as it should be. Is there anything I can do - to improve that? Or it's really taking so much time - to build this skill?
@KevinsdadNorb11 ай бұрын
Hi, Kevin’s dad here and I am right with you - I can switch between the D and C chords with the metronome on 80 like a champ, but when I try to change while playing a song (Wagon Wheel) I rarely hit them cleanly. I’m just bearing down on it in practice - it’s getting better but I’m still not happy with it. Kevin is posting our second lesson today or tomorrow and we talk about there. (If that makes the cut).
@andriirad11 ай бұрын
@@KevinsdadNorb , hi, Kevin's dad! Really glad to read your reply to my post! When I saw the first video with you and Kevin, my initial thoughts were the same, like: it seems like I started to learn to play the guitar about the same time as you, so it will be interesting to watch your progress and compare it to mine - to realize how efficient my practice is. Since I've written this post, I actually made a slight progress in switching between C and D and kinda playing the Verse part of the "Hurt", the way I almost can tolerate it ;-) So I guess the only way to improve it further - is to keep practicing. Really waiting to see the second video with you and Kevin. Don't give up and keep practicing, as your personal progress will be a clear motivation for me ;-) p.s: btw, I'm 38 years old, so also in a "late learners boat"

That is quite an awesome video, thank you very much ! There is just one thing I noticed (I guess it's a level 5 thing, although I'm still a strong level 2/3 who should focus on rythm :p ), it's that the very first time he plays the riff in the intro, he doesn't really play a D chord. The last string / most high pitched one (sorry for my english, I don't know the word for it) is played, but he doesn't pinch the string, so he plays an E, and not an F#. After the first time, he plays it with the F#, but the very first time not. I've always loved that detail, because it makes the song sound slightly wrong, like a hint that indicates that something is broken. Could also be a reminder of NIN's version too.

@kevinnickens Hey Kevin - randomly picking a video to make a comment, just to you in general, not specifically about the song, altho I've watched this video and have been working on L1 of this song. I'm a beginner and watch your videos (working my way thru the beginner vids while also practicing amap, which is a fair amount!). I really REALLY want to thank you for a) making these great videos and roadmap and b) encouraging us to use a metronome. I've been learning Gentle on my Mind because I like the chord changes (I can manage them quickly), I like the melody for accompaniment, but my progress felt stagnant JUST LIKE YOU SAID IT WOULD - not dynamic - and then I DID what you recommended and used the metronome and BAM game changer!! Oh, and I also played louder, like my life depended on it a wee bit.... THANK YOU. Hi to your dad. Love having another beginner along the journey.
