@artemis014 жыл бұрын
More than any clip, this 12 minutes by Jimmy explains everything about the O&A show. To be funny, you must be honest. Jimmy is funny because he is able to tap into honest shit about himself, as is Anthony. But Opie's reaction to Jimmy's rant here is enlightening. Opie lives permanently in a world coloured by dishonesty (which is different from lying) and irony. Anything that comes close to a "real moment" must be deflected into sarcasm for his ego to survive. I mean "ego" in the personality sense. To be honest on that level would quite literally kill Opie, in the sense that his entire identity would die. Jimmy has his issues, but we all know about them and therefore can help him survive. Opie's engagement with the world is in the ever-present "now" and so he can never truly grow, never become. His ego thinks this is a path to immortality, because by its unconscious logic, if he doesn't become anything, then he can never die. Opie is deferring life in the hope that it will defer death. Jimmy is staring death in the face and trying his best to live. What destroyed this show was 2/3 people in that studio embracing honesty while the other occupant looked deeper into a mirror

I never really felt Jimmy before until this segment. I feel the exact same way, and worst of all is that no amount of support, validation, or reinforcement makes you feel any better. It's fucked; I used to fantasize about jumping off my roof, landing on my neck, but then I feared that I'd fuck that up too and become a paraplegic (which is fucked since I'd then be in the same spot of laying in bed reflecting on my own failure, but with the added bonus of not being able to make a second attempt).

Inside of the strongest men lives a 'scared little child' that we fight a constant battle to keep deeply hidden in the dark recesses of our mind. When your child looks at "Dad" as if he were the biggest, strongest, smartest person alive, "Dad" has to really try to destroy that scared little child deep within himself and live up to his child's expectations.
