I love the way musicians who are far too young to remember the eighties can incorporate so much eighties style into their sound (i.e. simple straight rhythms and dominant synths with massive reverb), without considering it cringeworthy or cheesey as we would have done twenty-to-thirty years ago. It's taken quite some time, but it seems finally people can appreciate again the feeling that inspired such style in the first place.
@IanMcCausland4 жыл бұрын
right? I was their age in the 80's and loved new wave and early industrial, for these very reason!

Given they're all fans of acts like The Cure, Joy Division, and Bauhaus, it's unsurprising. Robert Smith (yes, THAT Robert Smith) invited them to play the Meltdown Festival in 2018, and later to play as part of The Cure's 40th birthday concert.
@Humanophage4 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure it's very surprising. It's easy to access music from any period without radio or television acting as an intermediary that strips away your choice. I am very happy that I gained internet access in my early teens, even if the speed was slow. You can just completely throw out the period constraints, commercial viability constraints, political correctness constraints, and just go directly for what you like after a modest amount of searching. Once you access the music, it will probably grow a circle of some fans.

i like this band a lot . i see a lot of comments about how they remind people of other bands , to me its very original i don't really see that . not that that would be bad per se . they are getting better and better . they are forming a nice style .

there is a genuine quality about this band that i find very appealing . i'm not sure how to describe it . i like this philosophy of doing that music that is in you .
@verminj4 жыл бұрын
I never agree with any of the comparisons. A lot of them are lazy parallels too. Maybe Xmal, but just because it’s dark and not sung in English. They have a very unique sound. Obviously 80s inspired, but 80s post punk, dark wave and goth bands didn’t sound like this.
@davidfriend19194 жыл бұрын
ok , i can see a little bit of how the bass and synths have an energy or an interaction with each other like some joy division songs , joy division played at a faster tempo though and kaelan mikla doesn't have a guitar . but maybe , hmmm .. i can sort of see that comparison sure ..
@davidfriend19194 жыл бұрын
joy division had a of sort new wave sounding vocals . kinda like the talking heads , devo , etc etc .. that is different , but i guess a comparison could be made .. not an obvious one though ..

@@davidfriend1919 They got together on a whim for a poetry slam in 2013 (they were in high school at the time). Maggie hadn't been playing bass for long before, Sólveig was on drums at the time & picked up the sticks for the first time ever a week before the contest. Laufey had never sung anything. There were no plans to continue beyond the poetry slam. Someone had the presence of mind to record them. (kzbin.info/www/bejne/hpnZoqaNgrGjq7c) After they won, people kept asking them what else they had and when & where they were going to play next. They literally learned how to play while on the road. (They've said as much in recent interviews.)
