I am an American living in Korea. Western media tends to exaggerate things, and while the recent martial law declaration was not a minor issue, it was lifted after only six hours, and life returned to normal the very next day. Of course, protests and rallies are taking place, but they are very peaceful, and no one is getting hurt. If you're a traveler, there's a high chance you won’t even encounter these protests. When you hear the word "protest," you might imagine those in other countries, but protests in Korea are often lively events where people play K-pop, sing together, and many kids come to protest with their parents, that is how safe it is. It’s more reminiscent of a concert. Therefore, there’s no reason to worry about visiting Korea. In any case, I believe it’s one of the safest countries in the world.

The reason some people didn’t realize what was going on was because it happened late in the evening and by the time most people woke up the lawmakers had made it inside the national assembly and had been able to get in there by bypassing some of the troops so that they could quickly resend what the president had done. Many of these young people‘s parents and perhaps their grandparents will remember in the 1980s how the struggle for democracy and to kick out the dictatorship military that was leading South Korea. So the parents remember and the grandparents remember the struggle to get a democratic nation and they do not want another dictatorship. Thank God they acted quickly which is why you’re all feeling pretty safe right now.

It may be a busy schedule, but a brief visit to Yeouido, where protests are ongoing, would be a good experience. Unlike protest sites in other countries, there is no violence or looting, and you can see that it is a safe place by looking at the children who come with their parents and young middle and high school students. It may seem like a festival or a concert when you see them singing and waving light sticks, but their hearts are serious and heavy.

What I can say with confidence as a Korean is that Korea values morality in times of crisis, so everyone is safe unless they are directly involved in it. When Koreans fight among themselves, they fight over who is more morally justified. If you visit the protest site now, you will be able to get drinks such as coffee at nearby cafes. Because someone sent money to the cafe in advance and donated the drinks to the attendees. The cafe owners are also providing free hot packs to people to endure the cold weather without making a profit. This is because few Koreans want to use the opportunity to make money when the country is in a crisis. Perhaps, Koreans are much nicer to foreigners now than usual. Koreans feel so sorry for not being able to show good performance when a customer comes to visit...

Even if a marshal law was passed and preserved until these days, I don't think it would've had significant affect on foreigners. They still can go back to their own countries if they don't like how the country turns out. It was more matter of political freedom both inside and outside of the South Korean parliament, freedom of speech, increase of restriction and oppression. A guy in 7:00, who said Koreans were exaggerating doesn't know what he's talking. He probably came from a country that never had a marshall law passed. It really was serious matter and showed fragility of the country's democracy.

Foreigners must stop misunderstanding the martial law in South Korea. That was the current leader Yun's personal decision, which couldn't get enough endorsements from the media, journalists, and most Korean voters. Yun's 1st intention was to deport hostile foreigners such as Chinese people who'd like to make South Korea China's colony. The main reason is that the opposition party Democrats is pro-China. However, he couldn't have enough support from most Korean citizens since the method was perfectly wrong in the first place. He doesn't have good communication skills and gorgeous rhetoric like the US presidential winner Donald Trump. Yun's administration couldn't give Korean voters enough explanations to have them understand. Thus, he became an unforgiven leader like the former four leaders such as Park, Lee, Jeon, and Roh. Those failed four leaders didn't know how to persuade citizens and also didn't know how to hear citizens' loud voices. Although an original intention was good, that can't be justified no matter what if the related methods and procedures were so bad. Unfortunately, Yun is still a chief of the prosecution service, not a leader of all Koreans. He doesn't know how to share his policies with Korean voters. He should've become a friendly major servant for Koreans...but he wanted to become the boss of all Korean people. That's his mistake. He must have forgotten his stewardship.

UNDER GOD (Jesus Christ) who has final sovereignty and rule.
