As an American who has been living in Korea for 16 years, I can say Korea is the best country I’ve lived in. Of course, I’m fluent in Korean. If you’re going to live in another country, you need to know the language. Otherwise, how can you make friends with the locals or understand their culture? Do you think a Korean who doesn’t speak English and refuses to learn it would be able to live properly in the U.S. or the U.K.? The reverse is true as well.

I agree with you 100%. I definitely saw people in the video complaining about the language even though the national language is Korean, not English. I saw a travel vlog from an American couple that complained the soup was too hot, that a restaurant did not have English menus, and the staff spoke "zero English"; I called them out on it and they said I misinterpreted their video. I speak 3 languages and if I go to a country that has a language I am not familiar with I always make an effort to learn a bit-otherwise what is the point of travelling?

True that. Since you have been living there for so long, please favor me by answering a question, I am very strict towards my diet. I don't drink, smoke or eat meat due to my religious beliefs. I have heard most Koreans are atheist and drink is the culture, will I not fit in? I don't have problem living all alone but who don't prefer company of sweet friends, yeah? I don't have other people eating anything or drinking, I just want to join them even if I m sipping on milk. Will I be able to make friends?

@@Anshika-cx6uu Are you a Hindu or Buddhist? I don't think your religious life is any problem in making friends there since there are many Koreans who practice Buddhism in S.Korea. But this is only possible when you are really into learning Korean. Korean learning is the Key to making friends over there. By the way, isn't it so obvious that you want to live in a foreign land and you do not care about learning their language? how could anyone expect to make local friends unless you are living in some La la land?

100% agreed! No one has the obligation to make life easier for you. That said, I've been privileged with a lot of unearned and even unsolicited help from many kind Koreans during my travels in South Korea. Koreans definitely try to help within their preexisting social structure and norms. Something foreigners can choose to adapt to or leave. Native Koreans don't have a choice to adapt to their own culture.

Because English is such an internationally preferred language - hence the reason why it's compulsory in Kore and Japan - native English speakers subconsciously and consciously expect everyone to speak some English. I think language apps as they get better will pretty much destroy this barrier anyway.

Hi, I wanted to respond to this comment because I'm the one who said it. Firstly sorry if it was taken the wrong way. Be aware that in this kind of interview half of what is said is cut to keep only the most important. Before I said that I said something else, and I put it in context, something like "Korea is an amazing country but unfortunately, racism is still very present". English is not my mother tongue, so I admit that the way I answered was too direct and not thoughtful enough. The interview wasn't prepared and I'm not a professional at all. We are asked OUR opinion and we give OUR own pov. I talk about my experience and my vision of things. I'm only 18 and I still have a lot to learn about myself and others, please be indulgent. I've almost only lived in Seoul, and here many of my friends from the black or Muslim community have experienced more here than in any country they've been to. So yes, I thought it was important to say. Sorry if it hurt, but that's my opinion.

As a Korean American who lived in Korea, I often faced more discrimination than foreigners. And this was mainly due to cultural differences and the expectation that I should fully conform to Korean norms, especially in terms of language. Also I don’t like to drink and was treated like an outcast, especially in a culture where socializing and bonding often revolves around drinking. Much of these factors made it pretty difficult for me to fit in and find connection, which often left me feeling isolated despite being in a country tied to my heritage.

Rather than discrimination, the generosity and consideration applied to foreigners who are inevitably social minorities may not be applied to Koreans of foreign nationality. It's a double-edged sword. You shouldn't just try to take advantage of the two statuses of being Korean and foreigner. When you come to Korea, think of yourself as Korean and just live happily. It is up to you to find your own way.

If you find people speaking to you in Korean "off-putting", there is an attitude problem. You are living in Korea, so what else would they speak to you in? If you can pass as Korean, people will speak Korean to you. The Russian woman made some false statements. Korean beauty is the most advanced in the world, including nails. Not every shop will be state-of-the-art, but they are easy to find. Subways are fast, but there are many lines, so perhaps they don't arrive every 3 minutes. It is not the job of any country to accommodate itself to you. It is your job to adapt to it. Many Koreans are very understanding of foreigners not knowing much about the culture or language, but it is still your job to adapt to the culture. You can't expect everywhere to be like your country.

However in certain parts of Asia, it's different. i witnessed this about 5 years ago where South Korean tourists got off their tour bus in K-tow, New York and they literally gasped and hurdled in corners, locking arm and grabbing their bags and blurted out without one hesitation in unison, "oh no oh no, look look it's black people! omg omg!!". they had fear in their eyes and i completely freaked out in front of them. best part was that this African American GENTLEMAN was dressed in full suit and was an older gentleman and he addressed them in PERFECT Korean not to be alarmed as the is a gentleman so not to worry. As a Korean man in 40s, I try to treat foreigners the same as other Koreans when dealing with them. I try not to look at them in particular, and I try to be indifferent unless foreigners ask for help. If a foreign woman is pretty, I sometimes look at her without realizing it, but I feel sorry. I would look at Korean celebrities similarly, but I think it is more of a privacy issue than racism. Am I wrong? Fifteen years ago, when I was traveling in France, a white guy on the street said to me, "fucking chinese," and that's racist. I find it hard to agree that Korea has a strong dining-out culture. Naturally, in your home country, where you have family, you probably cooked and ate at home more often. Similarly, Koreans cook and eat at home more because they have family there. As a foreigner living in Korea, it’s only natural that things would be different, as you likely don’t have family or close friends there. This isn’t necessarily because it’s Korea, but rather something that happens when you move to a country where you don’t speak the language and don’t have family or friends.

And friendliness seems to be subject to an individuals experience...doesn't define the whole. Btw, in the U.S, under Biden, because of the DEI movement white people aren't allowed in many places, and Asians who scored higher than others didn't get into universities they deserved to go to because they(also minorities) were excluded from the dei. Every country has pros and cons. If you focus on only the cons, then it’ll feel like the worst place in the world. In my experience, after having lived in a few countries around the world, generally it is what you make of it. The following are my personal experiences. I lived in Seoul for a few years during the 2010’s. I learned a bit of Korean before and during. Generally the people are super friendly, and accommodating. Koreans have been a very homogeneous culture and underwent rapid modernization and cultural infusion, especially in the last 10-15 years. Therefore, if it feels like they stick to themselves, don’t take it as an offense. I hung out with Koreans and foreigners there, and if you speak even a little Korean they warm up to you quickly. Lastly, if they are avoidant it’s usually because they’re shy about speaking English not because inherently they don’t like foreigners.

Even though I really love Korea in many ways, there are still some things that really make no sense to me and my wife (Who is a Korean-Korean). One example is, there is a group of koreans really don't respect the pregnancy seats. When my wife was pregnant with our first born, there were a lot of people who would casually seat in the pregnancy seat and pretend that they're sleeping whenever she comes by. This is not a complaint only by expats, but by Koreans as well.

Are you sure they are Korean? I mean there are so many Chinese working in restaurants, factories and construction sites across S.Korea. For non Koreans they may look like Korean. These days there are so many bad incidents related to Chinese working in S.Korea or those just visiting for sightseeing. I don't want to list all the unacceptable behaviours related to them. Just one example is that it became a big news in S.Korea weeks ago that a video was taken by a Korean showing a young Chinese mom letting her child to shit in the middle of street in Jeju island. I don't mean those people who ignored the pregnancy seats must not be Korean. There could be always bad apples wherever you go. Yet there have been so many norm breaking incidents related to Chinese visiting or living S.Korea.

And also quite interesting to hear the different people talking about the culture shocks, secrets of South Korea, and the hardest part of adapting to life in South Korea. It's also very refreshing to hear what they like about South Korea, as well. I'll be honest I was very surprised to hear someone of a different nationality, other than Black American or "other"...talk about racism in South Korea. I appreciated hearing her acknowledge the truth in South Korea that isn't always talked about as much. She made a great point about learning the history of South Korea before deciding to come to the country. It's something that I believe I need to do on my own as well. I don't want to romanticize a place I've never been without really immersing myself in the culture.

Hello, I'm the person who talked about racism in Korea in the interview. The purpose of this interview is to be realistic. We weren't asked "what's your favorite thing about Korea", because everyone already knows that Korea is an incredible country and I love living here. But let's face it, Korea is still very conservative. It's part of their culture, I'm not criticizing their culture, and in fact I say at the end that to understand that you have to understand their history, which is very interesting and rich! On the other hand, I think it's very hypocritical to talk about Korea as a "perfect country" because it's not. Just like any other country. The subject is Korea, so we're being asked OUR opinion of life IN Korea. Sorry if it was taken the wrong way, the interview was cut, my answer was "softer" compared to what he kept from the edited interview. I can't control that. I'm only 18 and I still have a lot to learn, I'm aware of that.

I don’t get the criticism, actually. Someone can dislike an aspect (or many aspects) of a particular place and still live there-and even still enjoy living there. There’s simply no “hypocrisy” there. (If someone living in place _x_ says, “Those who are opposed to racism in a place should leave that place immediately” and, at the same time, talks about the racism in that place, _that_ constitutes hypocrisy-that is, behavior that contradicts what someone is claiming to believe.)
