On the morning of March 26, the city of Baltimore woke to find the Francis Scott Key Bridge in ruins. The iconic bridge collapsed after being struck by the shipping container vessel Dali, which lost power as it was leaving the Port of Baltimore. Six construction workers who were filling potholes on the bridge at the time of its collapse are still missing, presumed dead. According to Jesus Campos, a coworker of the missing men, the crew on site at the Key Bridge was not informed of the mayday call before the bridge went down. The Real News reports from the scene in Baltimore.

I’m of the opinion that big business really doesn’t care if a shipping lane gets blocked or a bridge collapses, because it provides them with the opportunity to blame another broken supply chain for driving up prices.

As a retired captain, I’d like to suggest why the black smoke appears before the ship makes a SHARP turn to starboard and consequently, hits the pier. I believe the engines were momentarily restarted and they were placed in reverse in an attempt to slow the ship. I know that when the props are in reverse, the ship’s stern will move to port and the bow will move to starboard. This is what happened here. It was a mistake to reverse the engines. If they had just coasted, they (may have) missed the pier.

Sadly today they found 2 in vehicle that was under water. From reports, there was about 1.5- 2 minutes after mayday before the collision. I think they should have radios, but if they don’t speak English or no access to emergency coms, I don’t know, we need a better system. Perhaps going forward, bridges should have a warning light/sirens to get people off bridge much like a draw bridge. Very sad they weren’t alerted.

Hay Transportation Secretary Pete Buttheadjugg: A steel bridge that is a fracture critical design that doesn’t have significant pile protection will catastrophically fail by removing just one of the piles holding up the steel bridge. ABSOLUTELY NO EXCUSE for NOT having massive pile protection in place after similar circumstances of hitting and removing just one pile destroyed the Florida Sunshine Bridge. I remember that well and studied the failure in my College engineering classes.

There was an attempt to notify the foreman of the crew to get off the bridge and an officer was going to drive out to the crew but the collapse happened before he could go. You can hear all this on the police audio. The men were probably sitting in different vehicles while on their break. From what I have seen on the video that includes time in hours, minutes, and seconds, by the time dispatch contacted LE and traffic was halted, there was literally not even a minute before the bridge collapsed. To report the "crew was not warned," by an individual who wasn't even there is reckless reporting. Reply

I want to believe that the port authorities knew that tug boats could safely guide a ship of this size out of the port. If so, why didn't they? Too costly? The bridge had stood safely for nearly 50 years without incident, so did a risk assessment say it was of little need to do more than they had been doing? Presumably all of this will be investigated to prevent a future catastrophe, and what are other ports doing?

Wait a second, the fist responders just got the message seconds before the bridge collapsed. The policeman or whoever said on the radio that the traffic is backed up and that there is no way to pass it, but as soon as there is a clearing, he will proceed to the bridge to get the workers. No one expected the bridge to collapse. We should be wondering if intelligence agents were able to hack into the ship's system to mess with the steering. The attention should be on the UN finally demanding an immediate ceasefire which will most likely mean that the US has to change their foreign policy. What a better distraction than a bridge collapsing and to have planes drop aid into the ocean for Palestinians to go swimming after it and drown.

Workers on the ship are fine. They presumably knew what was about to happen. The front of the ship crashed into the pier (column). The steel span then collapsed, and fell onto the bow. I don't think the full weight of the span is resting on the ship, though. More like it's pinned under a big piece of twisted metal. This is a MASSIVE container ship, it's designed to carry a lot of weight.

Keep in mind that a ship that size could be sitting 30’ or more under the water line during normal times. They said with all that concrete that fell on it, it’s resting on the bottom. It looks afloat but some of it is sitting on the bottom. It might be shallower near the piers too.

@blobscott

@@VesperJester We clearly don't have all the details, but in terms of infrastructure and safety regulations (or lack thereof): Why isn't a tug escort required as these ships move through this channel under the bridge? Why didn't this bridge have collision protection barriers in front of the support structures, as other comparable bridges do? Would a bridge of this type be expected to fully collapse - at least this quickly - if a support is taken out? At this point, with limited information on the root causes of this disaster, these questions are rhetorical. I am just pointing out that in many areas, US infrastructure is clearly lacking and still looking to understand if under-funding (i.e. minimizing escort regulations to save money, not investing over time in adequate support protection, and general lack of bridge or safety system maintenance) contributed to this disaster.

I'm sure he has been interviewed, but at least for now, it very much appears to be some kind of catastrophic equipment failure. You can see the ships lighting go off twice before the collision. If there is failure of some kind, they would lose ability to control the ship.

I hope this will help with the confusion you are having I am not sure if I understand why you are confused though? I mean you know the interviewer Max from TRNN speaks perfect English right? You heard him speak at the beginning. I think the person he was interviewing probably didn't have great fluency to talk about a serious more complex issue and so he was asked the questions in Spanish to make it easier for him to answer. The interviewee probably knows a decent amount of English to buy groceries, have a job, drive a car, etc but maybe not enough to speak freely on a serious topic. There is a big difference between language skills that can help you understand directions or go shopping VS the language skills to talk about a tragedy or a social issue. I have been trying to learn another language so I know that first hand. I hope this helps?
@demongraves

Just because THIS interview is in Spanish doesn't mean that the guy can't speak English. If a bunch of your friends were missing in cold deep water after a tragic accident, would you want to try to explain how you feel in a foreign language?

I'm saying this as my opinion and under my freedom of speech. Watching the whole video,not what the news is broadcasting now. And watch how the lights go off. Then back on. Adjustments made in steering towards the pillar. Off again. Then back on like they were making sure if their aim at the pillar. Prove me wrong that this does not look like they were aiming directly towards that pillar. See how long it takes before they pull this video off their feed. Prove me wrong that this does not look intentional. That this could of been a retaliation by Iran and Houits sympathizer for the bridges we've destroyed over there. And the government and News is trying to cover it up saying a accident. How is it a accident with such a hard right turn like that when they were supposed to not have power. And when lights do come back on the ship turn even more each time to the right like they were aiming for it. And where were the tug boats?
@robertdecker8792
@robertdecker8792 Ай бұрын
Looked intentional to me as well from the news videos. The exhaust clearly shows throttling down 10 seconds before impact as a result of not using full throttle to turn or stop. Once viewing the whole video its clear they lost power 42 seconds before impact. Made a full throttle emergency correction to starboard, not realizing they had over corrected into a direct path of the other support, they throttled back down 10 seconds before impact and just before the last truck passed over the soon to fall bridge 7 seconds before impact. How anyone can say or believe they stopped traffic before impact is silly and denies clear video evidence.
@stevecaison510
@stevecaison510 Ай бұрын
@@robertdecker8792 finally someone with some common sense a reasoning. All these other replies are trying not to see the truth that this was a intentional strike. Possibly from all the supply bridges we've destroyed over dealing with the Houits and Iran
