Hi Jim. The # 1 cause of death for the little Key Deer (endangered) is auto strikes. Attracting or encouraging the deer to approach a car is the main reason they dart towards cars and get injured or killed. It's a huge and hesrtbresking problem.

Key deer are small. But the true old fla, deer isn't very big either. Some taller. But usually only weighing about a 75 to ,,100 pounds,, the key is just a subspecies. Of the fla, whitetail. ,,

Is this Big Pine Key or No-Name Key? Whenever I've been on vacation, I've usually seen dozens of key deer on NNK, not so much on Big Pine. Regarding the video - I don't see a problem. Let's face it, key deer and humans are destined for run-ins going forward, and there are benefits and negatives toward close human interaction. Some key deer are so used to humans that they almost seem domesticated, whereas others are much more wary. The goal to protect the key deer, long-term, is to try and prevent sicknesses/infestation such as the recent Screw Worm infestation from occurring again; putting tracking devices on many deer to track their whereabouts, see what islands they visit, how often they cross roads, when they are most active; possibly, try introducing small populations of key deer on other "large" forested islands in the mid-lower keys to improve their coverage (could Lignumvitae Key be feasible?) And, of course, limiting human damage and interference already on northern Big Pine Key and No-Name Key. Limiting power lines/electricity and the sort to No-Name Key would have helped, but it seems that's a lost cause. Having constant access to Blue Hole is crucial too.
