The club season is nearing its end, and as usual, the most interesting stuff awaits us at the finish. On May 5th in Antalya, the final matches of the Champions League took place, and we finally found out which clubs are the best in Europe. Three Italian teams and one Polish team battled for the Champions Cup.
Today I will try to give you a brief history, tell you how the teams made it to this final. And of course, I'll try to immerse you in the atmosphere of the matches themselves. And we start with the men's Champions League final, where Trentino - Italy and Jastrzębski - Poland met.
Polish club volleyball can now rightfully be considered one of the best, if not the best in the world. At least, the central blocker of the finalists, Yuri Gladyr, is confident that looking at the results of the PlusLiga teams in recent seasons, the Polish championship is the strongest. And honestly, it's hard to argue with that.
Three consecutive victories by Zaksa in the Champions League. And this season has become historic and could have ended with a golden treble. Projekt Warsaw and Resovia have already taken the Challenge Cup and the CEV Cup, so if Jastrzębski wins, Polish teams could take absolutely all European club trophies to their collection. All this against the backdrop of the Polish national team's victories in the Nations League and the European Championship.
Something similar happened in 2012, when four teams from the PlusLiga reached the decisive matches in all European tournaments. But then, only the Challenge CUP was won by a Polish team in a Polish final. Resovia and Skra lost their final matches to clubs from Russia.
Italian clubs, after the success of Lube in 2019, have not achieved victories in the most prestigious club tournament in Europe, and last year they even ended a streak going since 2015 when Italian teams consistently reached the finals.
And yet, the most titled club from the Superlega - Trentino, has reached the final three times in the last four seasons. And this time they are definitely set to break their streak of defeats in decisive matches.
Interestingly, for several seasons now, Zaksa has been the only team that stood in the way of Trentino and Jastrzębski in the playoffs. This time, Halkbank took on the responsibility of knocking Zaksa out of the tournament, so the path to the final was open.
Since both teams confidently took first place in their groups, their path began from the quarterfinals stage. Where Trentino noticed no resistance from Berlin, and Jastrzębski had a harder time as they faced Piacenza.
But, after a defeat away, the Champions of Poland, at home, confidently secured their ticket to the semifinals, where they had no trouble moving on.
Overall, the semifinal stage turned out to be quite dull, as both series, Trentino and Jastrzębski, were played in reserve lineups. And although there were spots worth watching here and there. In general, something more was desired because semifinals usually are the brightest stage in the Eurocups.
Will the final match please us? We'll find out now.
