i actually wasn't into them on my first listening of aenima. told the kid who brought it to not bring it back i didn't want anything to do with it. skip ahead a few years or so and H was pretty much on loop while i was playing online games. sometimes people aren't ready, don't give them flack, just accept it and bide your time. tool can bring around just about everyone with enough time.

This is exactly what I’m looking for when I’m looking for tool reactions. I am a musician, producer, and an earlier life was a engineer in my younger days. To be able to hear someone of your caliber react and break down these songs is so magnificent as a lifelong tool fan. Please let this be just the beginning I would love to hear you just go through the entire tool catalog. Their first couple albums are very gritty and to the point and then all of a sudden when you get to Aenema push the boundaries of musical limits and songwriting and ended up with masterpiece after masterpiece after masterpiece. This song is ABSOLUTELY using the Fibonacci sequence, if anyone didnt tell you. Maynard and friends specifically worked it into this album and this song. Check this out: Lateralus’s title-track’s introduction lasts one minute and 12 seconds and the numbers 0, 1, 1, 2 are the first four in the Fibonacci sequence. The first verse kicks in on 97 seconds, which is approximately 1.618 minutes, i.e. the golden ratio. Each verse is also 55 seconds long, which is the 11th number in the sequence. The syllables in those verses match the sequence too, peaking at 13 (coincidentally, the same number of total album tracks) and then again in a descending order thereafter. Furthermore, the time signature of the song’s main riff is 9/8, 8/8 and 7/8, and 987 is the 17th number in the sequence.

In the release interview for Lateralus with Rolling Stone, Tool said they were moved by the harsh criticism of Aenima being too simple, musically. They wanted to create a deeper, more technical sound with Lateralus. It is their most meditative CD for sure. To see Aenima and Lateralus being reviewed so much across the tube... 20+ years after they were released. It shows the critics were wrong. If you go back and listen to Opiate and Undertow, you will be able to see why they were signed to a 5 album contract so early in their career. Please name other bands that were signed to a 5 album contract with a major label after their first full length LP. I don't know any others.

Seeing your face when you were trying to figure it out and saying stuff like "Wow! That's so cool!" made me really happy. Because of how my brain works it's always rushing so when I can focus on a complex song and workout the time signatures, tempos, instruments and their quirks, etc it really makes me happy. I can't explain it. I've always been weird and it's tough to explain myself sometimes but it's amazing. Music is one of the few things I know that can help me focus as I get distracted easily. I'm always trying to multitask. Tool in general has helped me by giving me the tools necessary for many things in life. It's then about me learning to use said tools and the music helps with that too. I was already on a path of becoming a better me when Tool showed up in my life. Letting go of our ego, having patience, letting go of grudges, realize we are more together than apart. In a spiritual way, we are one all connected. It gets super deep but I thank this band for saving my life this time. Before it was Deftones for other reasons. I had emotions I needed to let out. But Tool is about wisdom and curiosity and I thank them for teaching me so much. Sorry to get all weird. Tool is my favorite band of all time, as you can already tell. 😂

Adam Jones is capable of playing traditional and technical riffs...but he says he usually ends up treating his guitar parts as more of a separate/extra vocal part. Perfect for this band. You literally couldn't replace anyone in this band and end up with "Tool". They are also aware of this fact as Danny AND Maynard have said separately that "We're just gonna keep writing music together until one of us dies or something."

Great reaction video. Tool is such a deep rabbit hole that never seems to end. You might enjoy watching the drummer's (Danny Carey) drum cam on their song Pneuma played live. He is truly amazing and it's a great video with great production and sound. Watching him switch between such complex time signatures so easily and effortlessly is quite awe inspiring.

On top of the use of the Fibonacci Sequence, Tool is also known for using polyrythems and polymeters in regards to time signatures. Their music is very complex, and Maynards lyrics are usually incredibly cerebral and emotional. I know people who don't even like Rock that love this band. Every member is at the absolute top of their game in terms of their professions. The Drummer Danny Carey is quite simply the greatest Rock drummer alive today. My opinion may not mean much. I’m a future drummer that longs to accomplish this song before I die. This is my all time most favorite song. And my favorite part is when the drums aren’t even playing in the mid sequence. I love when someone immediately understands the dynamic of Tool Adam Jones is in my opinion an extremely underrated guitar player because his style isn't flashy or virtuosic but his sensibility and skill for finding and using the space in between Danny and Justin is incredible. Tool is a heavily rhythm driven band and Adam Jones fills his role perfectly bridging the gap between bass and drums and bringing everything together

I'm late, but if you haven't watched the drum cam of Danny performing this song, you definitely should. At one point he puts a stick under one arm, still drumming with the other, grabs a mallet, and smacks a gong. It's beautiful.

Great Reaction, I think more then any other Band, Maynard’s voice is treated as another instrument. He sings within the music, instead of over it. You earned a sub, to watch the trip down the rabbit hole. In regard to the Fibonacci Sequence, count the syllables of the opening verse.

Also, the lead singer (Maynard) doesn't sing his first note until approximately 1.6 minutes into the song. 1.618 is the golden ratio, which is almost exactly the numerical relationship between the Fibonacci numbers.

There's a few places where his voice sounds incredible (descending for me), but I'll admit it took me a couple of listens to 'get' fear inoculum. On first listen I felt like the songs were delivered a bit slow. I see loads of people raving about tempest and its one of my least favourite tracks tbh. I could listen to pneuma/invincible/descending on a loop though.

Absolutely . I’ve described them as “sonic cathedral” . From packaging to the audio nuances their albums are splitting at the seems with esoteric meaning. One could listen to these songs a thousands times and find new sounds , lyrical interpretations, and life changing numinous experiences.

This song is an absolute masterpiece on infinite levels. Yes. Fibonacci influenced in the syllabi, layered with the content of the lyrics, layered with the audio effects and engineering, layered with the guiding belief system that has conspired to dictate Maynards own perspective and passions. Holistic. Meditative. Jungian philosophy influences. It becomes organic. All- encompassing. A juxtaposition of being simultaneously intrinsically primal yet incredibly advanced. Very nuanced. This track progression of this album seems to have been custom made for plugging in the headphones, then laying on a deserted beach or mountaintop at midnight -- just to watch the stars dance above while contemplating the existence of creation and the futility of our own brief existence. Yes. Yes, I have. A life expectancy of 80 years on a planet that is 4.6 billion years old. Spiral out!
