I remember the first time I listened to that album.. I was sitting at the table in an RV on our way to a nice little camping spot going up & down these narrow mountain roads. Watching the serenity of the nature I couldn't hear over the chaos of the music while sitting in a moving kitchen was pretty awesome and surreal. I've been into these guys since Alaska came out but when I listened to The Great Misdirect I got even more into them and have seen em a few times since then. Colors in its entirety was probably my favorite show I've ever seen.

My uncle is local well renowned Jazz musician. Can professionally play 7 or 8 instruments. The man eats, sleeps, and breathes music. He was never a rock guy and definitely not metal. He heard me listening to “Memory Palace” and stopped dead in his tracks to listen with me. He kept pausing and rewinding and it made me think of you lol. He made the same comparisons to Queen and The Yes. We traded bands. Now he’s gone down the BTBAM rabbit hole and I am going down The Yes hole as I have never even heard of them (absolutely love them now). His favorite song and song that made him bring up The Yes is “Coma Machine”. Don’t even care if you don’t do a video on it. Just listen to it at your own leisure.

Their shows are definitely worth going to. The astounding quality of their musicianship is 100% translated to their live show. They don't have too much going on visually (anymore than normal for a metal show) but seeing them able to play their songs is enough to satisfy.

I think one of the most unbelievable parts of BTBAM is the fact that Blake (The Drummer) goes into the studio and records every one of these songs by memory. So pre-tracking or anything. Just puts on a click and goes nuts.

This is such a strange comment lol. You think drummers write sheet music for original songs? Session players and gigging wedding/jazz guys of course have charts. But literally everyone playing original songs is doing it from memory. Do you also believe that the Beatles and Jimi Hendrix didn't know any music theory?

I was literally gushing over his talent the same way his own producer was on the making of for that record. @@lordfizzzhear me out: The Great Misdirect *is* 2112, just stretched out over an entire album instead of a single song. An all-powerful entity observing and controlling everything, trying to force an entire planet into a singular way of life, destroying individuality and originality. Believing their way of life is best for all. Convincing the population that they know what’s best and not to question it. Striking down any attempt at deviation from their plan. The protagonist, trying to ensure his species understands the impact they have on their own destiny, realizes his efforts are in vain and accepts his fate, drifting into the ocean. He’s found all that he could’ve ever wanted, yet it will yield nothing but suffering for not only himself but all those who come after him. “My spirits are low in the depths of despair, my lifeblood spills over..” “This is what I’ve lived to be. This very moment is the first time in my life I’ve felt pure joy” Idk man, I wasn’t even high when I connected the two. What do you think?

While they are great live, they also tend to be on a smaller budget so don't expect shows like Devin Townsend with huge screens and backup singers or dancers everywhere. It's usually just a giant wall flag with some sycned lights on stage. The band members are the main attraction. Would love if they went all out though and did a Parallax story arc play through with projectors and stuff.

Finally had the chance to dive into this slow burn. Thanks again for mentioning the engineering role Jamie King plays in these songs. He really does create soundscapes that encapsulate what the band is doing in such an "organic" way for this group of dudes. Proud of all of my NC/Winston-Salem folks (Blake, Dustie, and Jamie) and hearing them being deconstructed by the decomposer when I used to watch them perform in venues when we were all 15/16 years old. Enormous effort picking apart all the nuances across these tracks, nice work Geebz! I've been to every live show when they come down under and there's really not a huge amount of visuals and gloss to their live shows - they really get up and just play through their sets flawlessly. I mean, they really just play their tracks and it sounds exactly like their recordings, it's such a headspin to have a band this technical perform these complex tracks so perfectly. It's what makes their shows so special. You're always praising the bassist Dan Briggs, highly recommend you check out the song "Viridian" off their live 'Colors'; DVD - there should be a few videos on KZbin of it. The track is 3 minutes of pure bass solo which I know you'll dig. See you on the next video!

Colors is THE album I would ask anyone to listen to if they want to know what BTBAM is all about. While it ideally needs to be listened to in one sitting, if pressed for time, I insist that people at least listen to the last 3 songs in sequence (Prequel to the Sequel > Viridian > White Walls). It is some of the most intense, incredible music, and that final guitar solo is just… I get chills every time. I saw them live in Camden back in 2011 and they played that trio, and I felt like I was floating for the rest of the night. It was one of those life affirming moments.

I loved watching you experiencing these songs!!! There are SO MANY songs they have that take you on a journey!! I think you’d love “the proverbial bellow” or “sun of nothing “ and “Never seen/future shock “ In my opinion ALL of their stuff is golden.

I think you nailed it. Every song has this classical feel of having multiple movements within it, in comparison to the full album with its own movements.

BTBAM is such an amazing band in my opinion. I feel like the breaks in between the heaviness just make the heaviness hit that much harder. The contrast that they add sporadically always feels welcome and never out of place within the context of their music.

You honestly could have picked any BTBAM songs and I would have been happy, but still you picked some great ones! The palm muting riffs at the beginning and first verse of Backwards Marathon are a couple of my favorite riffs of theirs.

So I actually saw these guys last year, and they had no crazy visuals or anything believe it or not. Just the band playing 2 sets with their instruments, basic light work, and just stunning musicianship the whole way through. And it was am incredible show. To anyone reading them, if BTBAM are coming to your town GO SEE THEM!

Again, was so lucky to see these guys live, as a warmup for the Contortionist. Couldn't believe their performance, especially the drummer, sooo busy, every bar different. I wonder if I would appreciate them anywhere near as much if I wasn't blown away by them, that night.

Man, I love that you did this. BTBAM is probably my favorite band of all time. Sick line up of songs, genuine reaction. Nobody can hear everything they do on the first listen, and I think that's why they're so loved, they demand repeat listens, and you're always getting something new.

Of course I'm still here! Been waiting for Saturday so I can sit down and watch this while doing laundry. These guys are one of my favorite bands of all time. I've been lucky enough to see them live twice and they are absolutely flawless. One of if not the best live shows I've seen. Getting to see them play Voice of Trespass live a few years ago and the crowd just going insane was a highlight of my life. I would really love to see you do a reaction to the live version of Extremophile Elite.

I'm still here! Also a few random notes/comments/context throughout: -Prequel to the Sequel is off of Colors and immediately follows Ants of the Sky. So think back to that song and you'll get a sense of why that album is talked about 15 years on. - The bassist said in an interview that he's of the school of Zappa in his approach (and also has a few fusion side projects) - I had to chuckle at the repeated "this song goes into something else". -Finally, you make reaction videos that people like me watch all the way through. I'm here for it, man!

This is the content I'm subscribed for! Geebz, I think it's time you react to Viridian/White Walls which is the track that Prequel to the Sequel leads into! Viridian is a 2 minute bass solo essentially and I think you owe it to yourself to hear it considering how much you glow on the bass. I love it!
