Excellent band. More interested in song craft , emotion , and composition , as opposed to blistering technicality. They aren't afraid to let a song or theme develope . One of my favorite groups , along with Steven Wilson ( Porcupine Tree) , Rush , and Opeth .... Older - The Curtain Falls , The Same River Middle - Second Life Syndrome , Ultimate Trip, or Hybrid Times Later - Escalator Shrine , Towards The Blue Horizon , or Acid Rain.....my two cents. I'll throw Lunatic Soul in also. It is the side project of Mariusz Duda ( singer- songwriter- bassist from Riverside) Gutter , Summer Land , Summoning Dance There are no " electric guitars" on his albums . Only bass ,and piccolo bass, acoustic guitar, ukulele ,and just about anything else he can play himself ( exception is drum kit)

The trouble with recommending Porcupine Tree songs is that when you start trying to pick even a handful of "these are the best ones", you end up with a recommendation list which can be summarised as "almost all of them". So these are just the ones that speak loudest to me: Fear of a Blank Planet, from the album of the same name, which also has Anesthetize. Fear of a Blank Planet is my single favourite song of Porcupine Tree's Don't Hate Me and A Smart Kid from Stupid Dream. (And basically everything else on that album.) Radioactive Toy from On The Sunday Of Life. (Which is much more surreal in general. Linton Samuel Dawson, for instance, is a paean to LSD...) Four Chords That Made A Million and Hatesong from Lightbulb Sun Time Flies and Octane Twisted from The Incident

Glad to hear that you plan on getting around to Anesthetize, and yes, the Tilburg live version is the way to go. Don't expect the same thing you heard here, though. Porcupine Tree was a band that was definitely progressive in the sense that they always grew and changed from one release to the next, so by the time Fear of a Blank Planet came out, the feel was quite different, while still definitely being Porcupine Tree somehow. One of the big differences was the addition of Gavin Harrison, who replaced Chris Maitland, the drummer on this track. Nothing bad to say about Chris, but Gavin is an absolute beast, incredibly technical, while still remaining tasteful in terms of what is best for the song.

I hope you delve in more of there songs, since this band is one of the greatest under the radar progbands ever imo. Fun fact: Keyboards/synths/electronics on this album (minus some organs, pianos, and mellotron, which were WIlson) were done by Richard Barbieri, of the band Japan, which you might be familiar with. The vocals, guitar, songwriting, and much of the production is done by Steven Wilson, who is sort of the creative visionary behind the band. Their first three albums were basically just solo projects by him. He has more recently done remasters of the discographies of groups like Yes, Genesis, and King Crimson, since he's considered one of the foremost British producers in the prog sphere. He's also done production work with Opeth and has been involved with side projects like Blackfield, as well as his own solo career with some spectacular albums like _Hand. Cannot. Erase_ , _The Raven that Revused to Sing_ and a new album coming out soon called _The Future Bites_ which has a few songs released as singles so far ("Personal Shopper," with a guest spot from Elton John, "Eminent Sleaze," and "King Ghost")

Something that puts Steven Wilson in a special place is how his songs are always very tastefully arranged. He's a producer/musician.

There's a great live version of this track (Live in Tilburg if you want to look it up). Also some trivia as you brought up Yes a few times, Steven Wilson who's the main composer/writer in PT is also a well renowned sound engineer who did the remastering work on a chunk of Yes albums.

Love the shot of the tubes rolling. Epic. Two questions: 1) Where were your favorite surfing spots? 2) Did you listen to a lot of Genesis as a youngster and is that why there is nothing of theirs on your site?

Ah been a while! Love your content and while I'm not really a fan of Porcupine Tree i figured I'd watch this to see other perspectives. Keep going with this kinda stuff and i Recommend you check out Between the Buried and Me. Specifically something like Famine Wolf, the Coma Machine, Voice of Trespass, or Selkies the Endless Obsession. Admittedly i love their music so pretty much anything will do.

If you didnt reasearch already: Steven Wilson is an all around musician, he's the composer, singer, guitar (sometimes keyboard and bass) player, and the producer of his music along of other bands like Opeth and side projects like blackfield. There are dozens of good songs to choose from him eather in Porcupine Tree or his solo carrer, and i'm sure you will enjoy most of them for their composition. I would try 'Home invasion/Regret#9', 'Don't hate me' or 'waiting part 1&2' to name a few, the list is too long.

"Dark Matter" is from the earlier albums from Porcupine Tree. Once you've listened to a few other PTree songs, I'd go with "Arriving Somewhere, But Not Here" as their best song. "Mellotron Scratch" is another excellent song off of the album "Deadwing". There are plenty of other excellent songs in the Porcupine Tree catalog. Maybe a live version of "Radioactive Toy". Other worthy songs (IMO) are "Hate Song", "Russia on Ice", "Buying New Soul". I'm sure each fan will have their own list of favorite songs. If you want a *really* long song, you could go for the full version of "Moonloop", which is 40 minutes long. Or you could go with the shorter version on "The Sky Moves Sideways". That's the album where Porcupine Tree comes the closest to sounding like Pink Floyd. "Anesthetize" is basically three different songs mushed together, which kinda annoys me. Three excellent songs, but I think it's dumb that it was presented as a single song.

So go grab that heavy SD card. :p Since you're on this album (Signify, 1996; great starting place), you should check out, "Waiting, Phase One", "Sleep of No Dreaming" and "Sever".

I like how you mentioned in other videos you "third purple eye". Not sure what you mean. But it might be that you're ready to Tool's Third Eye. It's a long ride, over 13 mins long, but a very enjoyable ride. Keeping with Tool, 7empest (the 7 can pronounced like a T. It's the 7th track of the album, that's why the substitution, but SevenEmpest is also acceptable). I think it's the longest song to ever win a Grammy award for Metal (over 15 mins long). There's some serious riffs here. Adam Jones takes the spotlight from Danny's drums. Thanks for reacting to Porcupine Tree. Steven Wilson is a musician, and an artist. I believe his Wikipedia page doesn't have a Personal Life section, because he doesn't have a Personal Life. He release an album with a side project, tours with it, then another project, another tour, then solo album, another tour. Then produce a remastered album of a classic Prog Rock album from Yes or King Crimson, then another album of himself. Rinse and repeat. His solo work is awesome. Blackfield is like the radio friendly version of his talent. PT is out of this world. Check Drive Home, from SW The Raven that Refused to Sing. That album has as backup musicians Guthrie Goven (playing face melting solos in a fretless guitar) Nick Beggs on the bass (the guy from Kajagoogoo), and Marco Minnemann on the drums (a guy who was offered the drummer spot for Dream Theater and he rejected it, because he was not a fan of the band)

I am no casual listener of music but you have pointed out things I had no knowledge of; having no musical training. I am an old guy listener and realize anything that brings me closer to the music I love is a good thing. Your succinct explanations are informative and enjoyable. Well done sir. Also I agree with your premise to ignore the lyrics and concentrate on the song. My favorite group is Steely Dan and it was 15 years into my 40 year trek with them before I ever read a lyric..... Man what a surprise when the two met. Fagen is a brilliant lyricist with a sardonic view to most subjects. Basically my point is, lyrics never on the first listen but sooner than rather than later....jack

YAAAASSS, psychedelic rock at last! I can highly recommend is the band Colour Haze (kind of a niche band). They also feel at home in the psychedelic rock realm, but you can hear some jazz & blues influences in their songs, which btw are almost like classical pieces. If you are interested, check out their song "Love" . Not the "best" vocals, but the composition - pure emotion... definitely one of the main tracks of the soundtrack of my life.
