Adam Holzman played keys for Miles Davis. Enough said. I would not be surprised if the keyboard solo was improvised, just as Guthrie improvised the guitar solo. I couldn't even write something half as good as he just comes up with. Steven Wilson mixes all his own work. He has an incredible musical ear as a composer and an engineer. He also makes 5.1 surround sound mixes.

Adam is almost criminally unknown outside of the jazz world and Wilson's fans. Brilliant player, and a funny guy. Listen carefully to his playing on the title track of Wilson's "The Raven That Refused To Sing." Superficially, it's just a series of chords... but there's magic in the way he plays them on piano; he imparts a pensiveness that beautifully underscores Wilson's plaintive vocals.

Every now and again you get to experience something that borders on transcendental; such was the case when I saw 'Home Invasion/Regret #9' performed live. Interestingly it was not the first time, but the second gig I went to (at the end of the tour). You know that moment when you're watching a concert film and wonder how it must have been to be there? Well this time I was there, and the whole world collapsed around me so that I was a pinpoint of light observing a crescendo of perfect melodic cacophony; I lost all sense of where I was and just lived for the moment. I was so elated when it finished - then suddenly so sad that it had ended. I didn't come down from that high for several hours. I've only felt like that a handful of times at gigs: that moment in a 1980 Pink Floyd concert when David Gilmour stood atop the newly constructed wall and launched into the solo from 'Comfortably Numb' (18 year old me transfixed by the whole experience); sitting mouth agape as Wright and Gilmour traded notes during 'Echoes' on the 2006 Gilmour solo tour; those epic lyrics from 'Starless' searing into me (King Crimson 2015); Piotr Grudziński's guitar playing reducing me to blubbery tears during The Curtain Falls on Riverside's 2015 tour; the climax of 'Victorian Brickwork' by Big Big Train at Kings Place in 2015 (actually - the whole song). What memories ... Oooops, I'm rambling ... but then music does that!

He's no slouch guitarist but he also surrounds himself with some of the best players around to do the bulk of interpreting his compositions (ie Adam Holzman, Marco Minneman, Guthrie Govan). The results are most often compelling and truly imaginative. He's got a great musical mind and great ears... Nice choice today and enjoy your analysis...

Btw: I think you would totally love a whole album reaction of this. It's a great prog rock record with an interesting background story (from wiki): According to Wilson, the album is written from a female perspective, and the concept and story are inspired by the case of Joyce Carol Vincent, where a woman living in a large city dies in her apartment and no one misses her for over two years, despite her having family and friends. Wilson explained: "The basic story, or concept of the record - it's about a woman growing up, who goes to live in the city, very isolated, and she disappears one day and no one notices. There's more to it than that. Now, what's really interesting about this story is that your initial reaction when you hear a story like that is, 'Ah, little old bag lady that no one notices, no one cares about.' [Vincent] wasn't [like that]. She was young, she was popular, she was attractive, she had many friends, she had family, but for whatever reason, nobody missed her for three years."

Discovered your channel due to this and your Porcupine Tree vid... thoroughly enjoying it. If you think the last couple PT/SW songs were long do Raider 2 live 😅. And that being said if you haven’t already, check out Steven Wilson (and bands) other live work. LOTS of gems!

A great band VITALISM is an instrumental band 2 guitars an awesome bass player and a killer drummer. Their songs seem almost like they have lyrics or tells a story. I wonder how much is engineered or pure musicianship. Thanks for all the great reviews and explanations. Keep on keepin on. Aloha

I’m in Hilo and I play this solo on guitar. Sometimes I do not sound like I truly feel it, even though the notes may be right. Sometimes, I am not emotionally able to truly sound like I care. Ah, life..... Your video made me happy to see you as spiritually drawn in as I try to be. Al in Hilo

This albums is a masterpiece, and Govan's solo during Ancestral... and in fact, the entire musical section during the solo, is incredible. Its so moving and powerful.

Loving the videos man, it’s so great to see you experiencing music and bands that mean so much to me and likely so many other viewers! Steven Wilson especially is one of my favourite artists so it’s great to see him covered both solo and with Porcupine Tree! I’d suggest checking out Rolo Tomassi - The Hollow Hour ( m.kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z5bIo2uldtlkfZo )! They’re a great mathcore band from England that put out some phenomenal stuff last decade! Keep up the good work and of course, Aloha! :)

Love your channel. It seems like you are going through my playlist! Just in case it hasn't been suggested yet I think Leprous and The Dear Hunter might have some tracks that are right up your alley. The Dear Hunter - Gloria Leprous - The Price (good intro though I think most people would want you to listen to The Sky is Red) Cheers!

Hello, I really hope you read this. I've been watching all of your videos and the thing I enjoy the most about it is your facial expresions when music is this good, but I'd been waiting to see if you'd make a video about my favorite Tool song, which is Invincible. I'm sure it will blow you mind like every Tool song can blow anyone's mind.

I'm new to Steven Wilson. I hear elements of Classic Yes, David Bowie (Iggy Star Dust), maybe ELP, and Peter Townsend. I enjoy the use of movements on this journey.

Like you said the bass arragements are beautiful. I think it's doubled with slapstick and Wilson on "bass guitar". But the first bend is something that takes my breath away! And that banjo at the end. He did it with PT in blackest eyes c-part. I actually rehearsed it and we were playing this acustic gig and I had it behind my back for just that one part of 10 songs :)
