That arpeggio has been one of my favorite parts of the entire album. The way that it creates this “hopeful” anchor starting at 4:00 and carries us through the most intense and dissonant part of the song is absolutely perfect. Beautifully composed, Misha.

Of the three singles released so far, I think this is my favorite. The mix is amazing and I feel like it’s a full showcase of what Periphery can do in a single song as well as where they currently are as musicians. The interview with Misha as well as the teasers they’re putting out for the making of P5 have been insightful.

@mattvillarrubia3621 Жыл бұрын
Hey Geebz - I think the part where you mentioned the drums being "off" is the part where Matt's playing a Blast Beat. Essentially just a very quick pattern of typically16th notes where you alternate between the cymbal and snare. Due to the speed, the snare is usually the loudest part and it's really easy to confuse it with the downbeat but it's all upbeats (in this example, there are different blast beats that have different patterns). When I first started hearing them used in songs, I also felt like the drums were just "off" so you aren't alone! You get used to it eventually.

@TheMeJustMe75 Жыл бұрын
I have been playing guitar for close to 30 years now and they blow my mind. I listen to it and it's so complicated but if you actually look at it written out, it's simple. They take these awesome riffs, some clean and some dirty then combine them together to get this woven riff master piece. Then they add a synth/moog to backup with an arpeggio that is either blended in the background or is playing along with one of the guitar tracks. The drums just add to it all, too. Spencer's vocals and lyrics put it over the top.
@matthewworden6095 Жыл бұрын

I really agree with what you said, the hammering on the 4/4 is really what carries the syncopation of the chuggs on the guitars. Their Juggernaut albums harp on the china cymbal a lot to keep this movement going. I feel like this is really what drives the "Djent" feel, when you can clearly hear and latch onto the 4/4 groove but the syncopation dances around it.

I'm still here! Hours later, after watching the video in the morning and forgetting to comment! I gotta say, this track did not hit me as hard as Wildfire and Zagreus at first...but like pretty much all of Periphery's work, I listened some more, digested it, and I love it. Each section is its own unique flavor and it all comes together quite well once you know where the song is going. It's that first time around that is always confusing and you're not sure what to think. You've done plenty of Periphery at this point, and I don't remember what tracks you have done, but there's still a lot worth checking out. Next time you come around to them, if it's not new stuff, I think you need to do Stranger Things. Definitely one of their best tracks.

With the theme of the song, it's title(google if you don't know, I had to), and the video, I'm confident that the blast beat section was supposed to feel uncomfortable and chaotic. Not to mention the bits of text that pop up for half a second or less, those tell a story from the perspective of A.I. about how humanity destroyed itself and lives on through the intelligence we created. Really dark piece from every angle and I'm totally here for it.

I remember many years ago being told that Periphery was a band in a genre called "Math Music". Is that correct? Apparently their tempos and song structures are made in an add, subtract style that equals out at the end or something like that. Can anyone clarify that for me?
@darwinwatterson456810 ай бұрын
well, i know there's math metal and math rock . math metal in this case is also known as djent, and that's where Periphery's latest album title comes from 'djent is not a genre' hahahah. i'm not sure if they all 'equal out' in the end necessarily, but yes the rhyyhmic structures and time signatures are always intended to make the groove harder to follow !

I NEED you to react to either the whole or at least the first song off of Knocked Loose's "A tear in the fabric of life."
