Mark McKellar is a wildlife biologist with over 35 years of bird study experience. I made a small fountain and placed by my flower pots and hummingbird feeders. The top of the fountain I made to sit taller and just has water drizzling over the platform making it very shallow over that platform. The hummingbirds love it as they have a place to bath and drink water.

Sometimes on top of everything else it takes patience and perseverance. We live in Boston and there is limited visibility of the back deck. After three years we finally saw our first hummingbird a few weeks ago.

Thanks for the tips, Mark! Not using a hummingbird feeders with yellow flowers is a tip I didn't know. Keeping the bees on the trees and other flowering blooms for pollination is better preferred. I ordered a Hummingbird Vine, “Trumpet Vine” (Campsis radicans) from Direct Gardening and need to build a trellis before it's arrival. Working for better bird habitat and yard beautification seems to go hand-in-hand. Have a great week!

Red ribbons work too. I like to fold a length (maybe 8 or 9 inches) of narrow red ribbon in unequal halves, then maybe even put two of those together, to sort of mimic a spray of flowers. They flutter when there's any breeze, and that seems to make it work even better.

Thank you for your videos! Could you please make a video on how to clean pole-mounted fly-through feeders, pole-mounted hopper feeders, and pole-mounted seed-catching trays? These are a challenge for me.

I live in Texas and so far i change my nectar and clean my feeders every other day and to clean the ports i usually use a mascara brush from the dollar tree i wash off the mascara brush and throw the mascara away i use a baby bottle brush to clean the bottles and other parts of the feeder and a smaller brush for small spaces i clean my feeders with peroxide and hot water then i hand dry them and refill them but when summer hits i I might have to do it every day.

They also sell "disposable" mascara brushes at the dollar stores. They come in a little plastic jar like toothpicks do, a few dozen in the jar. They last quite well; in fact I'm still using the first one from the jar I bought last year) and you don't even have to mess around getting mascara out.
