Why do you tolerate suffering? | J. Krishnamurti
Extract from the fifth public talk in Ojai, 1977.
---
This channel is managed by the Krishnamurti Foundation Trust, UK, and by the Krishnamurti Foundation of America.
The role of the foundations was described by Krishnamurti when he said, 'The foundations will see to it that these teachings are kept whole, are not distorted, are not made corrupt. They will not give rise to any sectarian spirit in their activities... nor create any kind of place of worship around the teachings or the person.'
We maintain extensive archives of Krishnamurti's original works and all four Krishnamurti foundations are actively engaged in the publication of material in various forms.
Our videos contain thousands of subtitles in more than 25 languages, translated by volunteers from all over the world. If you would like to help us with translating subtitles, please contact us at digital@kfoundation.org

“When sorrow ends, there is not only wisdom but there is also tremendous passion which has got nothing to do with desire.” “Sorrow is a summation of energy. If we try to escape from it, by seeking comfort from it, then you are dissipating the energy that you need to meet this thing.” “So don’t escape from suffering ( be it physical/psychological) but remain with it and not identify yourself with it because you are that suffering.” “All energy is present to meet this extraordinary thing that has happened and out of that comes passion.”

You are that suffering ? Isn't it just a bunch of thoughts? I am not a thought, I am not my mind, so how can I be that suffering if I am just the awareness of it?

I've been following J's talks for a while now but now and again I find it difficult. I don't even think I have the English to explain it clearly myself - but I'll try. JK uses words like a mathematician uses numbers. But the image I've so far concluded from the teachings is this: I imagine a coin. The coin has 2 sides. A front and a back. Or should I say, a plus and minus. This is the rule of "karma" or "dependent origination". When you create something (any concept) you, by definition also create its opposite. That is duality. That is creation. Duality is created by action and whatever action is done also gives rise to the opposite action being possible (if I move forward, from that, therefore, I can also move back). This is the energy (action) which turns the coin - but the energy (action) and the coin are the same entity. You are here because of many turns of the coin. Here comes the hard part. The coin has to be flipped on it's side so you see the edge. So you are not seeing the front or back face of the coin (duality), but the edge of the coin (nonduality). When one sees that edge, they see, in fact, that your observations are not separate *from you*, but a recording *of you.* What you observe is a recording of everything you've been in the past due to past action. It's memory. It's just our brains think in terms of duality, so we assume we are separate from our observations. So when you see the beggar on the street, you were that. When you see the lawyer, you were that. When you see the priest, the gardener, the king, the queen, the soldier - you were all that. What you observe on the outside is literally "a recording of your past". Everything you see, you've already been. Realizing this, you are no longer a "participant in thought" (the sides of the coin), but a "witness of thought" (the edge of the coin). Seeing the edge of the coin is no different than seeing a spool of film. When you realize intuitively that your observations is actually the past, - your past - the search actually stops, the self dies, and you become a witness of what is actually a recording of your past self(s).

If I could extend your corollary, once you see the edge you no longer see the sides. There was only the edge to start with. Also I find a lot of commonalities of JK's teachings with Advaita Vedanta. I am watching a movie on the screen when there is separation. When the coin falls on the edge, I am the screen, I am the characters on the screen, I am the light that projects the characters on the screen, I am the projector and finally I am the observer. Or in words on Swami Vivekenanada - Brahman (the edge) alone is, everything else (sides) is not.

running away from living life and searching for the same thing😊. going in circles😊 not reaching anywhere. No need to run away from life or the thought of suffering. suffering follows like this. no need to search for life. some questions don't have answers . We are not evolved enough to understand. Acceptance gives relief. At the end man realises that they was nowhere to go and he has wasted his gift -life.

So I will never ever say that I am hurt. Why? Because, whatever I am saying is a movement of thought. It means the feeling that I have is a story and not a reality because it is the content of the consciousness. It is a movement of thought put together as a feeling. I is an image inside the content of consciousness. The hurt feeling is another image a story inside the content of the consciousness. How can the content of the consciousness get hurt from the content of the consciousness?

I never thought of suffering as some is needed or good...though what I was observing was...that suffering is created by being quiet in the dark with oneself or with what is and u r lead blindly...and 4 that= needs a awakening.. from this unaware dream state one can be in. The root needs 2 be pulled out= the same was Buddha has said= the same Krishnamutri speaks here about. Being dreamed into dreams and living in dreams...can quiet hide the obvious....therfore its called awakening or enlightening.❤

Jk jee has ready reply in respect of all menaces of mind, its cravings and one's suffering!!!. Why sufferring deters man/women from liberation? is the question boggles all of us... The "karma", the past actions again the thoughts only along with TIME( operating in past, past and the future) leading to the state of various factors leading to our 'suffering...' is in constant play or movement thought. Requirements of "I' over a period of TIME changes. So I suffer or enjoy with this form of " I". JK says " I" is the image built representing the individuality or idealism his/ her passion or desire. Sorrow being the essence of more energy met towards it and it remains as shadow. Jk jee says LEARN LESSON FROM SUFFERING and soon transformation takes place through compassion/love and sufferring grip is released.

It has surely come up before but something that would be helpful to better understand Krishnamurti when he is speaking - because of his accent and at times the incomprehension of a certain word here and there, which can throw one off what he is saying - would be to caption his words on the screen, as is done with song lyrics or foreign language movies. Even though I have listened to him in person several times and seen many videos of his, yet do I still struggle with his pronunciation once in a while. I had to stop this video more that once to go back and rehear what he said to grasp it.
