I think it was less about Randle guarding the 5, and more about the fact he and the athletically capable Obi, couldn’t rim protect shit. 5’s weren’t gonna punish Julius like they would’ve 15 years ago etc

It is a home run for the Knicks. Towns gives the Knicks a big man who can compete with the best big men in the league - Giannis, Embiid, Jokic. He's not better than them, but he is in the ballpark. Without question, Towns is an offensive big man who is an elite scorer down low and an elie 40% three point shooter for a big man and gives the Knicks an elite big man scorer to pair with an elite point guard in Brunson. The Knicks offense will be awesome as they have two elite three and D's with Anunoby and Bridges. If Thibs can get Towns to rim protect and not make stupid fouls this time (he couldn't in Minnesota), then this is a huge win for the Knicks as they will have an elite defense with Anunoby, Bridges and Hart - not to mention Robinson off the bench, if they keep Towns at the five. But even if Towns doesn't turn into a Thibs-ian defender at the five, when Robinson gets back, move Towns to the four. You still have an elite offense and three elite defenders on defense. In any event, the Knicks starting lineup is awesome and there is still plenty of depth with Robinson, Hart, McBride, Achiuwa and Payne.

Seems like a boom or bust play. Either it clicks, we have a top 5 offense a good D and are a true contender for 3-5 years. Or it’s janky, the vibes are off. And we are making a trade after 2 mediocre seasons.

I think you guys are understating the depth issue, which is why I (& I'm sure a lot of others) have major qualms about this deal even as we're excited too. OG has missed 30+ games in 3 out of the last 4 seasons and KAT has missed 20+ in 4 out of the last 5. Even if 2/5 of the Knicks' starters didn't come with big injury risks, a bench of McBride, Precious, and maybe a couple months of Mitch is just not going to cut it over an 82-game season. With so little margin for error in the East playoff standings it seems irresponsible to enter the season with functionally 7 healthy NBA-level players -- not counting Shamet (33.8% from 3 last year) or Morris (35 yrs old) because if either of them sees real rotation mins for a stretch this season the Knicks are cooked in those games. If they can turn Mitch into healthy rotation guys I'll eat my words but as of now this roster seems precariously thin

I would rather have guys that are happy and accept their roles rather than guys that are not happy or do not accept their role. No matter how good the players are the team won't reach their potential if there is any kind of negative energy/tension.

Great breakdown guys. Everyone wanted to see this team with a healthy Randle but it wasn’t the same team without ihart. Sad to see Randle and DDV go but I think this is a huge W. KAT could really be the missing piece

Jon, saying that the Knicks always got the most out of Julius, is a blazing hot take and not a fact ! Payton, Barrett, Morris, Gibson Payton, Bullock, Barrett, Robinson/Noel Walker, Fournier, Barrett, injured center Brunson, Fournier/Grimes, Barrett, Robinson … In 5 seasons with the Knicks, Randle never had a stretch big, paired with Barrett for the whole time except 1 month (!!!) … that s the worst bball fit for Randle you could think of, 1.5 yr he had Brunson and for 3 yrs it was Payton and washed Kemba Walker The Knicks never really cared to put together a team that boosts Randle‘s skillset Despite that he made 3 All Stars and 2 All NBA … the 1 month he had a great situation with OG, it looked fantastic. We just don‘t know what Randle looks like in an ideal set up for him. How many players can really guard Randle 1 vs 1 with spacing ? Randle ain‘t perfect, but lets not set up a false narrative. Julius tried to adjust to what the situation was more than the situation ever adjusted to him

Who’s playing next to Kat? Prefer Mitch but that obviously clogs things up but still better spacing then last yr. Anything else and we lose size and gain versatility.

C'mon, Josh Hart should not be the starter! Deuce is better suited to start. This puts the Knicks as a true 5 out offense. That's why you make this trade. Leave Josh as a sixth man. Swiss army knive role gives the Knicks what they need.

Did you NOT watch last season? Josh was the one starting whenever someone at the 3 or 4 went down. Josh is the Swiss army knife, not Duece. Duece is running that second unit, he's Brunson backup. He earned that spot last season and has the opportunity to be 6th man. It could have been Josh had he stayed in the second unit but moving Julius for KAT meant Josh is now back starting at the 4. This deal mainly happened because of Half a Season Mitch. If Mitch was healthy and ready to go, this deal wouldn't have happened. If IHART stayed, this deal wouldn't have happened. The common denominator and problem has always been Mitchell Robinson, he's too injury prone as starting center and he needs to go. Plus, where is Deuce playing in the starting lineup? He's not replacing Mikal at the 2, he's not replacing OG at the 3, he's not a power forward nor a center. Deuce is best off the bench, Josh will play the 4 and then Precious will be the backup 4, Simms is the backup 5. Shamet can be the 9th man and Payne will be the 10th man and both will come in barring injuries or foul trouble.

I'm not a fan of this trade for two reasons: the loss of DVo is primary IMO and I believe that you are trading continuity for Zesty Towns. Can he defend without Gobert? The only plus I have is that Towns hates Embiid almost as much as we do. I'm not calling him by his nickname until he shuts me up.

Yes, they were in DENIAL about RJ not working or the possibility that he would be moved like Randle and then shocked when he was moved for OG. They were even more mad about IQ being moved because nobody saw it coming, didn't understand why IQ had to go even though IQ did want to be a starter and he was a big piece for the team just like Donte. People forget when Donte came last season to the Knicks he came as a bench player, not a STARTER. Donte only got that starting 2 spot because Grimes was inconsistent. The front office got Mikal to be a starter at 2, so Donte was going back the 2 unit anyway. Now Donte going to Minnesota allows him to start at the 2 just like IQ going to Toronto and being able to start. It's similar.

“The advanced numbers don’t like Julius Randle” Although I have a ton of respect for Julius as a person my eyes did not like his style of play either. This trade opens up the floor obviously for Brunson but also for OG and Mikal to do their thing. Plus we get a talented center whose shooting opens up the floor and he’s a very good defensive rebounder who can also score inside off drives. Loved this trade immediately we desperately needed a center and got one of the best.
