I believe those flaws in the justice system should be the target, not the death penalty. He mentioned crime statistics but did not produce evidence of possible crime reduction by life without parole. The question is what good does the proposed methodology serve?

I think he mentioned the example ya go botsa the victim's family just for argument sake... justice is primarily for the deceased and the victim family is secondary. I know its impossible but why not give a scenario where we assume its possible to call heaven then call the deceased and ask them if their killer's right to life shouldn't be taken away? Ha o botsa victim's family you aren't really targeting the justice for the deceased, you are simply questioning the family member's emotional intelligence. Botshelo ga bo ratanelwe even within families so don't use a family member as a reference point because you might just ask someone who also had a death wish for the deceased... the deceased is the one who truly knows the value of their own life which was stolen from them, not an insurance biased beneficiary. Life imprisonment also takes away access to some rights, so it won't be surprising if these human rights defendants start campaigning for those rights too if this is the direction we are taking as a country. Justice is not all about preventing crime, its about equating the magnitude of victimisation on the perpetrator'side... crime prevention is just a secondary advantage and shouldn't be solely used to gauge the effectiveness of punishment.
