Congress recently cut food stamp benefits, now known as SNAP, and with food prices continuing to soar it's become more difficult for low income families to put healthier meals on the table.

"So where all the steak and lobsters..." This is the GOP meme. They've convinced everyone that the problem in the US is that the poor have too much money, but the rich don't have enough. Hell, they've even convinced the poor of this doublethink. The way the country is going, a lot of people making heartless comments and offering laughably simple solutions are going to have a rude awakening reality hits.

People have no clue how fast their life can change, in an instant. They need to learn how to appreciate what they have now, because one day it can all be gone, and they will be on the other end of the judgment. I'm on disability, and I'm judged all the time because I don't "look" sick. And people act like I'm supposed to apologize for that. I worked years past when my doctors told me that I needed to quit working due to my health issues. I work two full-time jobs in healthcare. I wasn't lazy then and I'm not lazy now, but I am unable to do the things I used to do due to physical and mental health issues.

I am disabled and adopted my 4 year old grandson to keep him out of foster care. I started working on the fields every summer at 10 years old. I have always worked despite marrying a man with a decent paying job. We are divorced now. My last job was as a forklift operator. I was there almost 30 years until my health could not do it anymore. I am blessed to have my youngest daughter living with me. She helps with her nephew when not at work. Other family members and preschool/ childcare is the only way I do it. Its better than him being in the system.

My husband makes a decent amount for a family of 5 ( I’m a stay at home mom) but at times it’s tight because taxes are taken out , putting money away for the kids college or future, and things that pops up out of the blue and our mortgage. To help him I started planting and reproducing our produce. We have no cable 🤷🏽‍♀️ and I have the lowest phone plan ever ($40) . The most the government wanted to give us for SNAP WAS $7 !!! Yes $7 . A lot of people aren’t just taking advantage of the system so don’t judge the people who are really trying to ask for assistance . When we are low on food I cook a massive amount of spaghetti if there is still meat left from that I will turn it into tacos 🌮🤷🏽‍♀️ she is doing her best . And I bet those are her grandchildren and she is sacrificing so God will be her supplement for the rest of what she needs

When I donate to the local food bank, I think of what a family needs to stay healthy with food such as yogurt and oatmeal. Peanut butter and canned fruit along with fruit juice in large containers and butter, eggs and milk. A large amount of macaroni and cheese and cans of tuna or spam are always very appreciated. Cereal is a necessity for children in the wintertime. Buying packages of dried beans is good too for protein. It all helps to feed children.

It has the same effect as a stereotype does. if every time you see a person of this group mostly or only in the news in a particular light, this must be true for everyone in the group.Plus, there is this stereotype that all hispanics or african americans are on SNAP, and its not true, and i think we can both agree that's not a good stereotype, especially when some jerks out there think all people on SNAP are lazy or moochers.

If Aldi is an option it is typically the best place to shop and the options are far better and healthier than in years past allowing for those little extras we ALL appreciate once in awhile. Dent and bent discount grocers and food pantries are also a blessing. My 82 year old friend gets $99 per month. When social security eeks up then food stamps go down the same amount almost. Seriously?? I have priced out Walmart vs Aldi and Aldi wins hands down but some areas dont have them close by. Quality is almost always great too. Example butter per lb 2.28 at Aldi vs 3.38 at our Walmart. That percentage wise is a HUGE difference and only one example. Basics are really cheap there. I shop sales all over so I could retire early and save on the basics. Aldi even over Woodmans is cheaper. Also shop sales and clearance by managing a freezer and dehydrate windfalls of fresh clearance veggies for use in soups and chillis. A small garden is great if there is room. Learning to cook and bake is a huge cost savings and typically healthier. Its a blessing this grandmother can cook. We can eat organic on way less than $300 per month and most times eat better than we can going out to dinner which is a RIP OFF. God bless that grandparents in children's lives. If not for them, many would have a tough bitter life.

Of course you can feed your family on $7 a day, or less, depending on where you live and how big your family is, obviously. I live in super expensive NJ. I have tons of videos up on this level of budgeting and frugality. Tons of super frugal recipes and meal plans. Even before we fed the whole family with dumpster diving, our food budget was less than $30 a week, for a family of 5, plus pets, including cleaning products and health care products and personal care products - not just the food. Coupons, coupons, coupons. When you are on that tight a budget, you absolutely CANNOT waste money on non-nutritive items like soda, chips, and sweets. You MUST focus on getting the most nutritious bang for your buck for your children.

First off, God Bless this woman for taking care of her grandkids! She's a blessing. Now, I will say that groceries in Tucson are costly compared to other parts of the country. On the NJ part of NYC you could buy meat packages which lasted you the month. There were $30 up to $100 meat packages according to budget and personal preferences. In Jersey, you could fill a basket with fresh foods for under $75 at the local market and that even includes some fish and seafood! No lobsters though. Yeah, rent is a killer, but food and utilities are affordable and healthy. In addition to that I've heard that public benefits are better out that way. Arizona is not as affordable as it seems or they make it seem. When Hispanic groceries are expensive you know the cost of living is inflated. Since when do hot peppers cost $1.69/lb at Food City? Even Fry's sells them at $0.99/lb. There's other high priced foods I have come across in Mexican grocery stores... Seems like they want the poor to live off crumbs and starve a little because it's a fashionable diet from what I heard. I'm just being sarcastic and sardonic.
