Dog whistles are so stressful if you have political conversations with centrists because you have learned to hear the dog whistles but it can be really hard to explain it to someone who isn't as familiar with the topic. It's like ~conservative~ white people who have germanic symbols as tattoos etc Theoretically they might just be a fan of germanic tribes, but it's probably a nazi thing because they love this stuff

I just had to comment on this because I totally get where you're coming from. I'm married to a guy whose ancestry is Norwegian and he likes studying Viking history and myth, so he's got Thor and Odin tattoos, but at the same time I remember that some people that have pagan tattoos are also into some really heinous things and it just blows my mind. It also worries me because I feel like if one supremacist has a viking tattoo, people assume that all people with viking tattoos are supremacists. But it's like it's so hard for people to be decent human beings and not be f*cking neo Nazis and I hate that. (Edited for my horrible spelling lol)

I also had to comment on this because I have two futhark characters (runes) and other pagan tattoos (of Irish ancestry and really enjoy learning about Irish paganism/myths and other cultures pagan practices, religions & mythology) and stuff like this really stresses me out. Mostly at the fear people might see my tattoos and be concerned for their safety around me wondering if its a white hate tattoo. But their caution is more than completely warranted because the far-right absolutely does use these covert means of signaling and whistling to one another, constantly, and people should absolutely be on the look out for it to decode the far-right/alt-right and ensure their’s and others well-being. It’s absolutely shit how many things with completely unrelated meaning & history have been co-opted by the right and warped to represent their disgusting groups and ideologies because of the fascistic obsession with conjuring up a false white-nationalist mythos, like the Nazis did with Germanic history and iconography. Symbols like the Celtic cross, Norse runes, Thor’s hammer, Hindu symbols like the swastika, the list goes on. American fascists do the same with revisions of American history to fit their western white nationalist mythos and the creation of new/co-opting of other symbols to use as their own. I don’t know where I’m going with this but just educate yourself on their dogwhistles (be they symbols or even phrases like ‘cultural marxism’) and keep an eye out! And I didn’t finish the video yet but you’re the best Khadija

If you use culture cues most people would know that black women sometimes refer to themselves and other black women as queens so people would usually connect the two. What they never bring up in that convo tho is that white people actually make up a bigger percentage of those on welfare. They changed up their language because you weren't gonna get any votes or support by outright saying "black women taking advantage of your taxes is the downfall of america" because no one will want to be associated with those statements.

Fun fact, 'strapping young buck' is why Battlestar (Marvel character Lemar Hoskins, recently in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier) didn't continue to be called the new Bucky, which was originally supposed to be a transferrable term. They rightly listened to why that wasn't okay, and changed it for him, which is something I find cool when today you'd have people going, 'well they were only trying to be progressive by making Captain America's sidekick Black, isn't that good enough for you?' And yes, accd to wikipedia they were informed that 'teenage sidekick replacement' wasn't flattering either.

So interesting to unravel the different layers of coded language politicians employ. This is why I think it's important to acknowledge that words aren't just words, how you say something can have real power. For instance, as someone who studies Chinese history it was very interesting for me to listen to this use of the word "kowtow" which derives from "koutou" in Mandarin a word used to describe an act of respectful prostration in Chinese culture. In many parts of Asia this act has a positive connotation as it is a way of showing deep respect and something people did/still do (at funerals, visiting older relatives, etc). But in the Western world due to the history of economic competition with China, it has taken on a negative connotation meaning excessive submission to a foreign, non-white Other. It's interesting to see the layers of anti-non-white "Other" coded in the language these politicians were using and how it contributes to the way we use language today. Recently, I was listening to a translation of a classical Chinese novel and even though the characters were doing a lot of "koutou" ing, there was a distinct avoidance of the word "kowtow" likely due to its negative perception to English-speaking audiences. I'm sure this is just one example of many ways in which words meaning one thing from a marginalized culture have been twisted and ascribed negative connotations by a dominant culture.

So you say stuff like, uh, forced busing, states’ rights, and all that stuff, and you’re getting so abstract. Now, you’re talking about cutting taxes, and all these things you’re talking about are totally economic things and a byproduct of them is, blacks get hurt worse than whites.… “We want to cut this,” is much more abstract than even the busing thing, uh, and a hell of a lot more abstract than “N****, n****.” When I first watched the documentary the 13th, they included that quote and it woke me the hell up from my comfortable centrist ideas that were being taken advantage of by dog whistling politicians.

Reagan behaves like and is seeking the powers of fundie and cult abrahamic God. The mirror projection of the actions of a violent cannibalistic father onto the children he discards is an important theological discussion because America is aggressively fundie christian. Our secular culture is spoken through the lens of Christianity. I know nobody cares. But it’s important. In genesis the crimes Satan committed are giving humans the self awareness that god is man and man is god. That keeping sapient beings naked and infantilized in your garden for your pleasure is horrifying. The ways abrahamic mythology has been coopted so easily by first monarchies then the ruling class and normalized in the non religious as a framework for a binary of good and evil are important to these conversations.

Sometimes I avoid watching these videos because it feels like this world is just too much and I can’t handle hearing about it. However, after it plays for just one minute I get so engrossed in the topic that I stay for the whole thing. I end up loving the way I feel knowing that there *are* people out there who really get it. I’m so sick of everyone around me not understanding what I’m talking about when I say similar things to this video. Yes, these topics are heavy and it’s emotionally exhausting to carry them around all of the time, but hearing the truth spoken makes it easier to keep going.

which is why i think dog whistles are so effective right. they have an argument built into them that “oh i dont hear it that way” that is inherently indefensible. i cant objectively tell you what you were thinking so you can lie about your intent without risk. thats why i resonated with khadija’s closing thoughts because i think maybe the most important use of history is to BUILD CONTEXT around words, rhetoric, and events. the only way dog whistles continue to be effective is if nobody remembers the history of the phrases, so you can trick the same group of people over (nixon) and over (reagan) and over again (trump) 🙃🙃 big sigh energy

As an American living in Berlin for the past three years I've always been somewhat discomfited by a weird vibe that I've noticed and now after watching this video I realize what it is! There's so much dogwhistling here, to an extent that a lot of my American friends back home don't realize, because they think Europe is so liberal and so progressive. But they've just discovered ways of hiding it more and ways of talking obliquely about it. Especially surrounding black and brown refugees and migrants, both right-leaning and left-leaning Germans hate them so much. As well as blind support for Israel and a huge anti-Palestinian block.
@Laura-gd4ku
@Laura-gd4ku 3 жыл бұрын
@@ferahgotheassasin I am German and this could not be truer. During the night of BLM people here in Germany prided themselves really saying “there is no racism here, police violence only happens in the US” and so many BIPOC Folx had to constantly explain white people that racism and racist police does in fact exist and is very popular in Germany. It’s so hard to talk about these things if people not even recognizing that it exists. But also think we should not blindly apply US-centric race concepts and especially political language to the German or European context. Some things are just very different and work in a different way due to the different historic contexts. And I would also say that left-leaning people generally support refugees more, I don’t know which group you are referring to but it’s more that centrists and right wing are trying to base their politics on xenophobia, while some liberals (liberals in Europe are totally different from the US, it has different meaning here) and the greens are more supportive of refugees but do in fact very little to support them and throw them under to bus regularly for political power. The left party is a bit divided, most are very committed to international solidarity but there is parts of the party who are wanting to gain votes from the right wingers and play the xenophobia card. Regarding the civil society I think that at the moment only leftists really support refugees coming to Germany and actually doing something like going to Greece to help in the camps or on rescue ships in Italy, organizing food and aid for camps in Bosnia and organizing protests, rallies etc. The thing about Israel is a whole different story it sure is fueled by islamophobia but at has more to do with the divide of the German leftist scene and the ideology of the antideutsche

@@ferahgotheassasin as a Brit, I get what you mean. I heard a lot of comments around BLM when the protests were going on that went along the lines of "racism is an American problem, stop trying to act like that applies here". And it is true that British racism is often more subtle and dogwhistle based then what I hear about in news reports from America (not always though, I do know people who have been hate crimed because of their skin colour), but that doesn't mean it isn't a big problem over here or that nothing needs addressing.

When 2016 election was going on I was shocked at how similar it was to 1933 when Germany elected Adolf chancellor. At the time Germany had just came out of a war, where they lost all their territories and were in debt (economy was down), and they had to follow the rules set by the League of Nations. The way the two candidates went about getting elected was super similar to Trump and Hillary. One was super nationalist (America first/ Germany first) and the other wanted to work with other nations. Not to mention how they used words. Did you know that Mussolini use to say make Italy great again when he was in power.

I just wanted to comment that I appreciate the work you do. I went to school for poli sci, and then graduated from law school. Critical Race Theory, unpacking racial/gender/etc issues was a big part of my "growing up" and education. I'm half white/half black, grew up a token, and when I went to college and learned the words for certain issues, it finally gave me a name to put to the things I've felt or had happen to me. Today, its harder to talk to people how these issues imo, than it was in 2012 when I graduated from undergrad. In 2017 you'd tell people about CTR or Reagan's legacy with race/mentally ill/deregulation of childhood tv/etc (they aren't equally important, but Reagan did a lot of terrible shit insidiously) and they'd tune it out. In 2021 people will actually get upset because they don't want to be uncomfortable or talk about some dude badly they worship. So I commend you for a) talking about these issues, and b) in such a nicer way that I ever would. I'm mean as hell lol, especially after law school. I have no patience for the disingenuous and these topics attract them.

I think the stupidly strict Christianity I grew up in (in Canada) would've mellowed out and at least considered being not bigoted if Reagan never happened. Point being that he has done so much and even though I didn't grow up near him, time-wise or location-wise, he still affected my everyday life.

I truly enjoyed this one. I have literally listened to it at least four times. Keep up the great work!
